Minimum pledge amounts for charity events

Sunday, May 05, 2013

Hubby and I were looking into the MS Bike Tours. Specifically a 2 day event going a total of 160 miles. Registration was $40/each. Very reasonable. So what's the catch? There was a minimum pledge amount of $300/each. We don't have that many resources for large pledges and we are only willing to ask friends and family to support one race/event per season.

I understand that to pay for drink stations and all the extra's participants receive you need to ensure a minimum amount received per participant but that seems like a bit much. On top of that, what if I pay for the registration, raise $250 in pledges and then don't get to participate. What a waste of my registration fee and efforts to get pledges. How disappointing.

I haven't seen a running event structured that way yet, is it a cycling thing? Maybe we'll look into more bike events, that one was just the most well known local event.
