I woke this morning to the coldest morning so far this year - temperature was 1deg. C., not exactly motivating. I was up out of bed long enough to turn on the heater, make myself a hot drink and jump back into bed for the next two hours, most of which was spent sleeping. Reluctantly I got out of bed at 9am, and while the temperature was now up to 5 degrees, that breeze felt soooo cold. A bowl of porridge with diced dried figs and skim milk, with a hot drink to follow, and I'm beginning to accept the fact that today isn't going to be a warm one.

One particular friend of mine just cannot cope with the heat of summer - to her, anything above 25 is way too hot. She does her supermarket shopping, gardening, etc. either early in the mornings or after the sun has set. When we want to catch up with each other, I go visit her at home, where the air conditioning is working 24/7. I always take a cardigan or long sleeved top with me to wear while I'm there, something she laughs about each time. During the cold months, the opposite is true - she comes visit me, I try to avoid being outside early mornings and after 4pm, and prefer to stay indoors unless I'm either working in my mini vegetable garden or hanging out/bringing in the washing.

There is only one thing which I look forward to each and every day, unless my joints are protesting too loudly, and that is walking my two dogs. The excitement they show when they see me with their leashes in my hands makes it impossible for me not to smile, and even though the smaller of the two, a Maltese Shih Tzu, dislikes the cold as much as I do, he is probably the most enthusiastic of the two of them. They both have a workout leaping up and down for the first few minutes after spotting their leashes in my hands, something I don't try to stop, simply because it's a good reminder of the pleasure we can all enjoy just by taking a walk.

I know that, was it not for my dogs, there would be next to no exercise in my life during the cold months of the year. I also know that I would miss out on seeing so many unexpected sights while walking - the kangaroos watching us as we watched them, each of us mesmerized by the sight of the other, the rabbits sensing us coming near and ducking low behind a clump of greenery, the lizards we've come across, the people and dogs we've met...

The old saying that dogs are a man's best friend is true, but my dogs are also this arthritic and not very motivated grandmother's best exercise motivators and companions.

What a great blog. It takes all kinds, warm blooded and cold blooded to make wold work! I looked at my daughter through the heat sensing camera lens and she practically glows in the dark. That is why she can't stay under the covers- warm blooded with good circulation. But why does she want to sleep next to me whenever she has the opportunity, I suppose to kick the covers off me so I won't 'overheat' and can wake up frozen to check on everybody... emoticon
Enjoy your walks and your dogs!

    Loved your blog xx.
My Bobby is also a Maltese Shih Tzu.
He is black and white and really pushy .
He gets me up in the morning by pulling the bed covers off ..
We walk early and then come back for breakfast ..
He is happy then and settles down to snooze till later on in the afternoon and its walkies again.
I use a wheeli walker and he is very careful to not trip me.
I love to walk and I do know that if I didn't,I would be in a lot more pain than I am.
Hugs Susie emoticon emoticon
