Guess who's back!!!

Saturday, May 04, 2013

Well, I can honestly say.. my life has been "icky" since November. During a lovely Zumba class, I managed to turn or do something not correctly.. and threw my back out. Well I thought it was a simple pulled muscle or something.. didn't think much about it. So I stopped with the exercise, laid on the heating pad for about a week. I started feeling slightly better so I figured I would start back slow. I took the stairs at work one day (4 flights) and within a couple of hours, I was in excruciating pain. I could not walk upright. I had to crawl to the elevator and someone had to help me get into my car. It hurt to put my foot on the gas.. much less the brakes. By the time I drove the 20 miles to the doctor, I was hurting so bad I was crying, panting, etc. My blood pressure was through the roof. Turns out.. I had 2 herniated disks that were pinching on my sciatic nerve. So the doctor initially put me on muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatories and pain killers. DID NOT WORK. Next they had me in physical therapy taking a butt load of steroids. This is where the pounds starting packing on... steroids made me balloon up.. but lets just say, none of this worked either. So after weeks of pills, chiropractors, steroids and physical therapy that did not work.. I was slowly losing mobility and all the time feeling the pins and needles burning sensations from the waist down. So in February, back surgery. Doctor went in and cut away some of the discs so they were no longer squeezing on my nerve and they had to go back in a week later and burn the nerve endings. It had undergone so much damage, I still had the pain. So after 2 months of healing, physical therapy, and more steroids.. I FINALLY have approval to start back exercising.. but am limited for the time being to your general cardio, aerobics, etc. Not allowed near a Zumba class for now. So I am going tomorrow to enroll at Planet Fitness. I cancelled my YMCA membership when I was injured. I didn't see the point in paying for something I could not use. Since I cannot do any classes like Zumba or Boot camp, I ain't gonna enroll at the Y until I am allowed to do that. So I figured, Planet Fitness is the best option at $10 a month. Sadly, I gained about 40lbs due to the steroids and not being able to move for weeks at a time; but I'm just as eager now as I was a year ago to get this weight off. So wish me luck :)

There are always big and little bumps along the way, just take a deep breath and take little baby steps to get where you want to be.
