Off IV last night

Saturday, May 04, 2013

So both of my doctors came to visit yesterday and decided to take me off the IV now that I have my food prepared and diarrhea has stopped. So woo hoo, freedom! I slept well despite the fact that the doctors confessed to me that I was a hard case and they really don't have a diagnosis yet. They really don't know why I am not absorbing foods. The thing they are most concerned with is the low level of Vitamin B. Normally it should be 170 and mine is .2. That is way low. So that is why they have been giving me a B shot (ouch!) every other day. but now they are putting me on these special pre digested drinks with enough B so I won't have to have the shots. I will drink 3 of these a day as well as eat Carmen's meals. Carmen delivered enough meals for a week and will deliver more. The doctor instructed Carmen the cook to make my meals without nightshade veggies, no dairy, no gluten, no sugar (agave is okay) and no real spicy anything...so no garlic, onion, etc. So just imagine trying to make things with those rules! What else is there? Anyway I had my first meal from her last night. Chicken veggie soup and tapioca pudding made with almond milk. Everything was delicious. She was also instructed to make the meals at least 1800 calories and the 3 drinks will add more calories. So I should be able to put some weight back on.
The other thing that they want to treat is that my brain is not making enough lithium. Not sure if that is a symptom of the lack of Vit B or not but I know my brain is off as I am really fighting hard to not be depressed. I don't want to go on antidepressants so I am trying to fight it by just positive thinking. I will admit it's hard when you are worried and have no diagnosis. They want me to see a "head doc" who might prescribe lithium.
And the final news is that the GI doctor wants me to have a colonoscopy. He is going to try and schedule for Tuesday. More fun. This will be like my 4th one and I doubt they will find anything there but will do it just to eliminate things.
So that is my update for today.
I will try and catch the Kentucky derby today. I always think of my Grandfather today as he was a racehorse owner and had a stable of like 12 horses. It was fun to go to the races when his horses were running. He has some very good ones as well.
Hope all my sparks buddies have a great day.
Sallie

I hope that soon you will be able to put on the needed weight and feel back to normal. What a messy Kentucky Derby yesterday. The horses were lucky to stay on their feet.

food sounds delicious. You are a fighter Sallie.
Let's hope these B fortified drinks help you gain

Great news that you are off the IV. I'm glad you got outside and went for a walk too. It seems like you are finally making some progress.
I was fascinated to read about your Grandfather. I always watched the races with my Grandfather. I hope you enjoyed the Derby- lots of rain :-P

Glad to hear that you are off the IV. I had a friend that was put on a special diet and could not have any nightshade veggies or dairy and no sugar. After about 3 months her problems straighted out and the doctor allowed her to intoduce some night shade veggies and a small amount of dairy back into her diet, but he wanted her to have no added sugar to anything. She said that it was not hard to give up the sugar as she felt so much better now.

I've been catching up on all you are going through and amazed at your strength through it all. I do hope that they can sort out what is going on for you so that you can resume your healthy life. You are right to say to those who have an appetite to embrace it... and to really cherish the days when we feel good!

Sounds like Carmen is a wonderful cook!

emoticon I'm delighted to hear that you're off that miserable, wretched, dreadful IV, Sallie! That's a very positive sign. I think you're going to feel so much better now that you won't even recognize your new self. You have always seemed very positive to me; I'm guessing they were talking about the lithium and psychiatrist because they were concerned that your malabsorption might've led to a biochemical depression. I hope the (very frequent - ouch! I know that's an intramuscular shot, too emoticon ) B shots will improve things markedly - given your extremely low blood level, I'll bet they really will. Carmen's meals sound as luscious as they are healthy - it sounds like she's a kitchen magician, with her gift and skill for omitting all those ingredients! I sure don't envy you that colonoscopy, but I'm so glad they're being extremely careful in thoroughly evaluating you. I think you're on your way to a very strong, healthy recovery, Sallie! Susan emoticon

    Yay, Carmen!
Hope the new regime helps.
Why do they need to do another colonoscopy, for crying out loud?

Sallie, I'm just now reading about your illness and wanted to tell you I'm sending prayers. How very frustrating not to have a definitive answer to your problem. But how AMAZING to have doctors who care so much - that is a true blessing!!

I friended you some time back because I'm quite interested in the fact that you are living in Mexico - DH and I are retired and have considered moving once our grands are older. But I haven't been keeping up with you and am so sorry you are having these issues! However I am very happy that you are working so hard to stay positive - good for you!!

Having always had a weight problem its tempting to 'wish' for a loss of appetite - thanks for the reminder that is is NOT something to wish for!! Blessings, Marilyn

I'm going to give a emoticon for getting off the IV. It sounds like they are making progress even though you are a "hard case." I really hope you are on the road back to feeling well.

I'm glad that you are getting meals prepared and are drinking the shakes. You definitely don't need to lose more weight and you need to feel good both physically and mentally.

Please realize that so many of us are "in your corner." I will keep your recovery in my prayers! emoticon
