Finished grad school and sort-of new dr

Friday, May 03, 2013

Last night was my final presentation for grad school! One more week until graduation! Such a huge weight lifted!

I went to the dr today. Not the same one I have been going to, but this was my dr when I was pregnant with my 1st 2 kids (now 15 and almost 18!) and he has been my kids' dr all along. I came in with my lab results from the past 2 years and expressing my concern about possible thyroid issues causing the weight gain, dry skin, and many other symptoms. He went on to mention several that he could observe just in the few minutes I was with him and commented that my Vitamin D had been low on both previous labs. He said he felt pretty sure that it was my thyroid and would run tsh and free T4 to begin with, then may look at T3 and others depending on what we found. He also is running a full metabolic panel to particularly look at blood sugar, as he said that diabetes could also be a cause of some of my symptoms. He said it would be better if it is my thyroid because that is easier to treat.

We talked a lot about diet (not A diet) and how we can see patterns of possible thyroid issues going back several years. Several things that my previous doctors never mentioned can all point to thyroid issues as well. (menstrual issues, dry skin, depression, anxiety)

I am not convinced that this will be the cure-all (not sure I agree with some of what he said about T4 and t3), but it is a huge step in the right direction after my appt a couple of weeks ago! We are at least on the same page in thinking this is what is wrong and working to address the issues!

Congratulations on finishing grad school. One big burden lifted off of your shoulders. Maybe now, you can concentrate on your health. Getting a different perspective from your doctor is always good. I hope you can find what is really ailing you. Good luck!

emoticon On completing your MA! I know how crazy that can be, my final thesis was an intervention for a child with severe & multiple disabilities and my supervisor was a nightmare; I cannot imagine how much tougher something like that would have been including a husband and five kids!

Congratulations on finishing Grad School! emoticon
A good doctor is hard to find. You know your body better than any dr that sees thousands of patients. Sounds like this one will work with you better than your previous one. emoticon
