Spent all morning with my mom and dad, they are wonderful people. My mother is a first generation Christian. Prior to that, my grandparents became Christians near the end of their lives; I may have missed out on generational love and acceptance found only in Christ, but my children certainly are not! While I was fixing my hair in the bathroom, I heard my father say through the door to Kiley, “You know you are a good girl!” I smiled. I realized that because my parents were Christians growing up, they paved the way for me to accept Christ, and now my children have two generations telling them how loved and cherished they are. It was very overwhelming to fathom the depth of such a gift. One I know full well has been given to me by God.
God has an intentional design for families. He created them! Exodus 20:4-6 says, “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.” I am so thankful to God above I was raised with the truth. My parents did not choose to worship Allah, or one of thousands of Hindu gods or even call unseen realities spaghetti monsters. No they choose to show me Christ, the way, the truth, and the life.
Because of that and because of my husband and I commitment to his Excellency, our children can make a solid decision for Christ when their time comes. It comforts me knowing that we and our children and our children’s children will be shown love from God to even a thousand generations. That his loving, tender spirit that leads us to repentance will always be wooing each to his side, to their eternal home with him. There is such great hope and love found in knowing God intimately. His promises are so sure. I’ve found likening him to imagine the greatest love story ever told and then foolishly attempting to bring words to it. Only God alone could do it, and he did it so eloquently through his Word, his very Son Jesus Christ.
There is always so much talk of generational curses. I realize they exist and even my children have fallen victim to some of them. I mean after all, we can pray like the dickens, but when all the dust settles, my daddy has shown me that our children, even our grandchildren have free wills. It’s best to just entrust ourselves to Jesus knowing that whatever our lot may be, if we love him, he will work all things, even stinky things, together for our good. He has promised to do it, so we need never be afraid.
Yes, I love Jesus. Every day more and more it seems. I need him in everything, I see him in so many things. He is so near, he is so real, and he is so willing to be our constant companion always. I love watching my children play with their Nana and Papa, their Grandma and Grandpa because it is the way God designed it. Children's children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children. Proverbs 17:16 God loves sticking more gems in grandparent’s crowns, oh, how he loves family. He so clearly shows us this by inviting us orphans, renegades, misfits, and utter nobodies to be a part of his. Yes he says we are a part of a royal priesthood, a holy and bold generation, peculiar people set apart to declare our Father’s business.
Beloved he makes all things known. He who did not spare his own son, but lavishly gave him up for us, how will he not then give us all things?! He wants to more than we know how to receive them, but there is a catch. Although there are mountains of grace stored up in heaven, I am convinced he only passes out what we need. Things were wild and wooly as a kid, tempers flared, anger was an everyday occurrence, exacting revenge reigned supreme, but my parents eventually got it right. They never gave up despite many, many obstacles thrown their way and despite very, very challenging childhoods themselves.
Because of their love and commitment, I am writing you today. Because they determined to follow Christ even when it wasn’t pleasant, even if it meant being looked down upon, they were up for the challenge. Satan did not have his way with my family, and now three generations are boldly proclaiming the gospel. I love Jesus folks. He is just utterly amazing, but you know that. If you have made Christ your friend and savior, you know exactly what I am talking about. Be encouraged today, church family, God is indeed up to something, and it is so sweet, so heavenly, so amazing. No one is going to miss it, and every born again child of God will have a part to play!
Thank you mighty Jesus for your love, your faith in entrusting us with your word and for the incredible privilege to call you friend, I am nothing apart from you. Jesus, you are stirring your people. I sense great expectancy and deliverance. Jesus, you never weary of our call to you. You never turn a blind eye to our hurt and pain. You are our great intercessor and mediator. You have been tempted in all ways and did not sin. Truly you are our high priest! Jesus, this day and always, be glorified. Many times in history, lights went out for the church, help us to remain calm knowing you are carefully watching all things and in perfect control. Oh, Jesus, help us to see how LOUD AND HARD you are laughing at your enemies. Patient, holy, perfect God have your way in America. Have your way with our families. Use each and every one of us mightily to boldly proclaim your name. I love you Lord. So be it!
