Natl Day of Prayer, & Other Special May Days

Friday, May 03, 2013

May was named for the Roman goddess of spring and growth.

And today May 2nd was the National Day of Prayer in the States.

When I was young I loved celebrating May Day (May 1st), also of heathen origins, with colorfully decorated baskets of home-baked goodies left on doorsteps; it was especially fun to ring the bell and run. And watch from behind a bush as they open the door, see the pretty basket, and look all around.

Here are some other special days in May:

May 4 – Star Wars Day

May 5 - Cinco De Mayo (Yum yum yum. How about Cinco De Mayo MONTH, instead of day?)

May 6 - Nurses Day

May 7 - National Space Day

May 12 - Mother’s Day - my first w/o my mom

May 14 - Anniversary of Lewis & Clark’s Expedition - Read Munford Meets Lewis and Clark by Jamie Aramini

May 20 - Flower Day

May 25 - Decoration Day Work Day - families gather in private cemeteries that don't have paid maintenance, bringing hoes and cleaning and pruning equipment and lawnmowers. The work parties clean the graves, headstones, and the cemetery. The cleaned up graves are decorated. The hard work is done on Sat, and a family-type get together is on Sun & Mon.

At other more modern cemeteries and public cemeteries who have paid maintenance, there is less landscaping and cleaning work and more of just decorating and remembering the dead, on Decoration Day. In that case, Decoration Day is often on Memorial Day.

May 27 - Memorial Day - Raise your flags, and pray for the families who have lost loved ones during their time in the service.

May 28 - Aldus is closed on Monday, May 27. Clean out your freezer and get ready to be at ALDIs at opening time on Tuesday, May 28, to get fabulous markdowns on meat and chicken. For menu planning the week of May 19th, shop from your freezer first and inventory the freezer to see what you need the most.
