Taming my sweet tooth

Thursday, May 02, 2013

Hi friends!

It's been a while since my last update! Since then I have lost three pounds and gotten my momentun back. I can't wait to see what the new month will bring! May is my favorite month of the year and I'm usually bursting with energy. Let's hope this year is no exception!

On another note, I'm doing the Tame Your Sweet Tooth challenge this month! I tried it a year ago, lasted a couple of weeks and gave up. That's not going to happen this time. I'm so sick of the constant cravings, the mood swings and the horrible sugar crashes!! I really want to show this sugar addiction who's the boss and put sugar back to it's place as an occassional treat enjoyed in moderation. Easier said than done? Yeah, probably. But I'm excited and determined to try.

This all started yesterday when I got really nauseous after eating A LOT of sugar. It was May 1st which is a national holiday here in Finland, and OF COURSE there were sugary and unhealthy treats everywhere you looked... So I over-indulged, and paid the price later. I've been eating really healthy lately so my body wasn't used to me consuming those kinds of amounts of sugar. I got so sick; my stomach was hurting and cramping, I was nauseous, my heart was racing and my hands were shaking... I had enough! I asked myself: why are you doing this to yourself? Why are you putting this toxic, addictive stuff in your body up to the point of nausea? And then I remembered this challenge and decided to give it another try.

Today was my first day without sugar and it couldn't have been better. Smooth sailing! But I'm sure the cravings will come sooner or later, and when it happens, I'll be prepared. I'm going to share my ups and downs with all of you here on my blog. So stay tuned for more updates in case you're interested to know if I'm going to be able to kick the sugar habit over the next four weeks or not! :)

emoticon Hi...Awesome blog!!! First off you can so do this!!!
I have an issue with sugar,I have been without sugar since right before Christmas of 2012...Now when I say sugar I mean cakes and cookies things like that.
If you can eat them in moderation that is GREAT! But that is NOT the case for me.
Unless someone has been through this they have no clue.Right now I have no self control when it comes to sugary sweets... emoticon For right now this is the BEST thing I can do for my body.
The momentum keeps you going!!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
We are all right beside you!!!
God Bless~Christina emoticon

I admire you for doing this. I don't know if I'm strong enough to try de-sugaring just yet but have had those same feelings after over-indulging. One day. I look forward to your updates and learning the ways you coped with the cravings. emoticon -- Lou

Good luck! I have horrible sugar cravings, too. I don't like many sugar-free things because they usually don't taste very good, but I have been testing out things here and there in the grocery store.

Dreyer's makes a frozen fruit pop that is sugar free and really good! (25 cal each, and really good!) I realize your grocery selection will be different over there, but you could probably make them yourself by freezing pureed fruit into popsicle molds!

Also.. if you can get them over there... the sugar free wint-o-green lifesavers and the sugar free wether's originals both taste just as good as their sugary counterparts, and you can have like 4-5 of them for only 45 cal :X Plus with the life savers, the mint flavor is so strong, I usually don't want to eat anything else afterwards because it would taste funny!

If you crave a substitute, hopefully my suggestions help :)

Mint also generally does the trick for me: of a strong mint, or brushing my teeth, or even sniff mint essence...

Good luck, it's a hard one, I'm struggling with it too. I'm now trying to look at hidden sugars (such as "fruit yogurt = 15 grams of added sugar").

Don't forget the trick: When you really need something sweet, try a fruit like a banana or strawberries.

It is so strange that our stomachs can't stand putting garbage in them, although some time ago they were totally fine with it!

Have a great month!
