Hurray for Fitbit.

Thursday, May 02, 2013

I recently got this great little tool called Fitbit Zip.
For some strange reason it has motivated me to walk, move, run or jump - any movement to count as a step.
On the second day I had this handy dandy attached to my belt I crossed over the 5000 step mark.

Yesterday on the 19th day that I had been wearing that cute little Zip I reached the magic number of 10000+ steps.

Now today I had this strange emoticon urge to get out and reach that magic number again. I walked for 3+ kms and logged 5000 and a few steps. I have kept moving since I got home and now there are the numbers 7000 showing under steps taken.
I know before this day is finished I will get at least 10 000 steps again. emoticon

So what is there about this itty bit of portable technology that urges me to walk, move, skip or bike - anything - just move move move?

I can't answer that question but I know I'm going to keep on using it. I got my mojo (often called motivation) back. I feel like moving. I feel like dancing. I feel so good.

The virtual challenges sound neat! I know I don't walk 10,000 steps in a day or even close...I would be afraid I'd lose it though

Wow, your zip has made a huge difference! Thanks for sharing the numbers. I've read in other blogs that the zip increases the motivation to move, but no one has ever said how much in how long.

I've been thinking of getting a fitbit one day when I can afford one and to see your motivation to move increase only solidifies the idea even more. There's lots of things on my fitness wish list; i'll just have to add another! My husband won't be very pleased. lol.

Today, even though I could have parked at the front door of two stores I went to, I purposely parked as far away as I safely could to get in the extra steps. Sure would love to track my steps.

Well good for you and way to get moving! They are coming out with a FitBit Flex that you can wear on your wrist and I pre-ordered one. In the meantime, I use my heart rate monitor because my wellness program at work gives me credit for each workout I do. So that motivates me to get moving for at least 30 minutes 5 times a week. Isn't it funny what gets us moving. I can't wait until I get my FitBit Flex. I'll have to check out the virtual challenges that Linda mentioned.

I don't know, but it works for me too! First I got the Zip, which was a gift, the 3rd of January. It really motivated me to move more. And I joined a team on the fitbit site which is virtually hiking the Appalachian Trail, which is fun for me. Then the end of February I decided to upgrade to the One, so it would track "floors" I climb. I don't have access to steps most of the time but our area is pretty hilly so I get at least a few floors going out for a little walk, and more if I go for a longer one or go hiking. Then I joined another team on the fitbit website that is virtually climbing the 7 Summits, which is the tallest peak on each continent 10 feet is considered one floor, so if I do 5 floors in a day I've gone 50 feet up towards the peak. Some days that's all I get, but some days I get 40 or 50 and a few times I've gotten over 150 floors in a day on a long hike. Some days I don't get any floors. But that's okay. That has motivated me to look for more hills to climb, when before I often tries to find the flattest route. So it's really made moving more a lot of fun for me. Great job on the progress you're making. Before Fitbit, I would reach 10,000 some days, but a lot of days I wouldn't. After I got it and started building up my steps it's not very often that I get under 10,000 steps in a day and usually more. I did take time to build up my distance though. So you are doing a great job and you'll be surprised what you'll find yourself doing!
