Finding JOY in automatic cars

Thursday, May 02, 2013

Usually I love a STICK SHIFT. I have always owned a stick shift - up until my last car was demolished in an accident. The replacement I got is an automatic. I figured that's okay...at least it's a car.

But today...today I was thankful that I had an automatic. See where I live there is a HUGE mountain. I drive up it every day going to work...and come down it every night. Those in the area call it "THE GRADE"! When you drive down it at night it's beautiful because you can see the lights of the city. It's quite amazing.

This morning...going up THE GRADE was NOT amazing! We had a wild fire. The mountain is surrounded by grass, trees and lots of things that CAN BURN! It is/was a bad bad fire. The 4 lane freeway going South closed two of it's lanes. The fire was nearly touching the freeway itself. YIKES

I got the joy of driving to work this morning right next to this FIRE!! Yikes, scary, smoke and SMELL!! EWE.

The drive was agonizingly Slow...and UP HILL. Had I been driving a stick shift - well lets just say I"M GLAD I WASN'T!

45 min to go what normally would take 5.

Tough morning....the firemen were right there standing a hands with away from the freeway. Helicopters were flying overhead and dumping stuff on the fires. Policemen with blockades. And lines and lines and lines of traffic as people like me were trying to get to work!

I had plenty of time to pray for those fighting the fires..and for those who live in houses really close to the flames. In fact I had MORE TIME to pray...because I wasn't worried about driving my stick shift car and "accidently backing into the person behind me"!!!!

Yes, today I was happy that I drive an automatic!!!!

I used to always drive a stick shift until I got into the Houston traffic. Any time you are stuck in traffic, an automatic is the way to go. lol I'm so glad you were safe and so glad you were praying for the firemen. I do love firemen.

Or those kind of cars. LOL yes I do have a automatic now, but I do miss my stick once in a blue moon.

Remember when the gear shift was on the steering column. 3 on the tree! LOL
dated myself with that one there

So glad you are ok out there .

Are you in CA? I was hearing about a fire that had already consumed thousands of square miles.

Many people have never experienced a stick shift, but it's what I grew up with. Learning to drive and accepting my apparent lack of coordination was pretty entertaining at times--more to others than me, I'm afraid. I'm glad you survived your drive and without tiring the leg muscles involved in maintaining your position in a stick shift headed uphill. Automatics rock!!
