Playing with my food

Thursday, May 02, 2013

I watch little kids play with food. They squish it in their hands, mash it up and rub it together. It's a mess and something I thought I outgrew many years ago.

But I DO play with food......in the preparation. That's what prep is, after all. I get to peel it and dice it and move it around. I get to squish meatloaf and pound dough and rub spices between my fingers. I toss salad with my hands, grab piles of peels to toss out, then lift the cut pieces into a bowl or pan. I get to feel with my hands the very food that I will transform with heat so that I will feel it with my mouth. I get to smell butter heat to nuttiness, smell fat rendering from meat.

When you eat take out or eat in restaurants, you only get to feel it with your mouth. When you cook, you get to play with it first. It's a blast!!

This is why making bread is my favourite thing ever - there is something so agreeable about using your hands to mix, knead and shape the dough emoticon

I donīt feel that way ordinary, maybe in an even earlier phase - if I pick the food myself, for examples nettles, mushrooms, berries, potatoes... than I really enjoy preparing it too. But food I buy...no, I find it boring to prepare, could be that I canīt afford to buy the best quality.

Cool notion. I'll never look at food prep the same way. You've sparked me into getting into it. emoticon emoticon

Oh, I can only see it that way in my imagination. I wish it was otherwise.

ah, Nell...you make me wish i liked to cook more. But maybe looking at it as playing will help.

Nell, is your background lolo pass? Just curious.

Absolutely!!! You have now struck one of the reasons we cooks love to cook! I don't believe that anyone who says they are a chef and who doesn't get right into the feel and smell and thingness of food can ever be a good cook. Food prep is sensual!!!! When I make meatloaf, I squeeze the meat to combine it. I roll meatballs. I form pastry dough with my hands. I rub olive oil with my fingers onto each leaf of lettuce (you would be amazed how little it takes and how much you save when you do it this way, and it feels great!) I taste my gravies and soups for flavour. And smell....my kitchen is heaven when I making bread or stew.
Food is very, very sensual. It fills your senses! And fun!

I always think of food prep as a time-consuming pain in the neck that keeps me from doing other things. From here on out, I'm going to consider it play time. Thanks for the inspiration!!
