A little discouraged

Not with my half marathon training... actually that's going really well. I went from 5 miles last Wednesday to 6 miles this Wednesday and took 45 seconds per mile off my pace.

What I am discouraged about is my weight. I've been busting my butt with running, biking, weights and swimming and in the last 2 weeks I've gained 5 pounds! WTH... :( I know, I know... gaining muscle right... Its still tough to see 170 on the scale.

5k race this weekend. I'm not sure what I was thinking but I scheduled myself for a 4 mile training run the day before... think I will run 3 today, bike tomorrow and then kick butt on the 5k.

    Yeah you're obviously doing really awesome, so enjoy that for a while! Do you know how to make the scale look better? Just put Jane on it and watch her be cute:)

    Thanks everyone! I did a lot of thinking yesterday. Its TOM, I did eat fairly salty food the night before, I've been drinking tons of water and I changed a medication recently, so I'm chalking up the weight gain to all that. And muscle of course! :) Thank you for all of your words of encouragement. I appreciate each and every one of you.

Veach - that's right! stupid scale!!

Robin - Not too many NSVs in the clothing area, but it is becoming a lot easier to run with my recovery times becoming shorter and shorter. I haven't been cramping up... or any of the other problems I've had during/post run. I love your new profile pic, BTW!

Moonchaser - you're right, I need to keep my nutrition up instead of in a deficit, but I really wanted to shave a few pounds off before the race in June. I think its psychological that I "think" I can run faster if I'm lighter. LOL

Prairie - Thank you!!! I will try to remember to report on my results!

AJ - You are right. I think a lot of my pace reduction was the weather. I dressed more appropriately this week than last. I got overheated last week. I will take the improvements where I can get them though! :) Thanks for the info about retaining water. Hopefully those pesky muscles will get rid of it soon!!! :)

    It's not necessarily "real" weight. When we do a lot of training, our muscles tend to retain water as part of the healing process. ((You took off 45 seconds per mile? That's FANTASTIC!)) I know that doesn't help when looking at the scale, but just know it's more important to be fit than to hit a certain number on the scale.

    I have read on other blogs that when you are training for a big race that you should probably aim for maintenance on the weight front. Something about needing more food to sustain the energy levels racing uses.

I know that any gain is discouraging, especially when you have been busting your butt, but hang in there and try to celebrate the NSV's you are bound to have.

    What about the nonscale victories like measurements or clothes fitting better? I hate that darn scale too...but the tide will start turning for both of us soon! Hugs...Robin
