What makes you happy?

Lately upon my return to the Midwest I've started to think that as long as I have sunshine, I can be HAPPY!! Lol, but then I started thinking about what makes people happy?

My childhood was not the best. I remember for years, when wishing upon a falling star, four leaf clover or blowing out my birthday candles, I'd think the same thought: I want to be happy. So I think I've always looked for happiness externally: if I make this much money, I'll be happy. Live in this type of house, in this location. Have this or that type of job, weigh this much, be the best at this, look like that.

And then when I'd get whatever it was I was seeking, and still not be happy, the excuses would start. I had a bad boss. I was in the wrong neighborhood. That was what I thought I wanted to do, but "really" it wasn't. I can't reach my goal weight, so how can I feel satisified with my life. I did reach my goal weight, but now really that's not thin enough. And so on, until I started looking for the next job, goal or place that would finally be the key to starting the life of my dreams.

But I'm starting to see that we must generate our own happiness from within. Surround ourselves with the people and activities we enjoy and that enrich our lives. Make the best of every day and appreciate what we have, here and now.

I've even thought of moving back here to my hometown. I don't know if I will, it is so contrary to anything I would have wanted for myself in the past. In fact, all my life I just wanted to get away from here!! And yet, I think I could be happy here. I am starting to think I could be happy most places that I have my health, dog, running, and contact with family.

I want to start a new experiment. Can I be happy, here and now, with all of life's so-called imperfections and abiguities? Let's find out... but I'm feeling good so far :)

What makes you happy?

I get my happies from the little things:
cuddling with my cat, a cup of tea, a good book, climbing, walking, swimming, dancing (especially dancing).

Life is too short to be doing things that don't make you happy. So once you've found them, cleave to them!

Totally make myself happy and nobody can do if for me! Making jam makes me happy to name one thing, I wonder if my rhubarb will ever come up, (LOL)! emoticon

Great way to reflect on things. I think you are finding your happy place. To answer your question, I make me happy. I believe happiness is a choice. We can wake up and chose to be happy with our blessings even if the only thing we feel blessed with at the moment is life itself. If you wake up and think I am happy to live one more day then everything else can only make you happier : )! I am sure near death experiences make one appreciate life a little more than before each time... But hey it sure helps during endless rough times!
Enjoy the sun and being home with your mom. Hope you make lots of good lasting memories while you are there.

Glad to see your feeling happy. I am happy, I love each day of my life and give thanks for it. It was not always like that, I've had some very black periods in my life but on the whole its been good.
Possessions have never bothered me, as long as I had a job, a roof over my head, cloths on my back and food on the table, I was content, I've never chased the buck looking for my next big job, some people find this strange, I guess where I grew up with very little you get used to being happy with what you have, if that makes any sense. emoticon

YOu know we all think the grass is greener on the other side, but when it comes down to it, often we find that our backyard is still the best. And living here on the Delmarva Peninsula and working with a lot of high school kids, often they think they will be so much better somewhere else, but a lot of them slowly realize that this is the best place to be---maybe we don't have everything, but the pace is slower, we can drive to major points of interest if we need more excitement, and now more and more those things are coming to us. And maybe we don't have the best job or the best boss, but we really are in charge of our own happiness---we are the ones that let them interfere in it. Glad you are feeling better.

It's certainly worth a try - and, meanwhile, enjoy the sunshine!

I live close to my family and that is most important to me and I have certain friends who I can always count on. And the belief that there is something greater in life than just my own needs and wants caring for others needs and wants brings me happiness.

Really glad that you are feeling well and happy, sure seems like the sunshine did you a world of good.
I have been thinking about what makes me happy, my family, my pets, my garden, my health. I do think happiness comes and goes, sometimes we need to be unhappy to know how wonderful being happy feels. ( Hope that makes sense)
looking forward to seeing how your experiment goes, have a great evening. emoticon
