Taco Bell "Fresco style" to save calories

Wednesday, May 01, 2013

The good news? Almost every Taco Bell menu item can be order "Fresco Style" to replace the heavy sauces and cheeses with zesty tomatoes, onion and cilantro. Order the Fresco Style Crunchwrap or Border Bowl for only 470 calories and 14-16 grams of fat. Now those are some healthy choices

I really like the Taco Bell cantina bowl when I am traveling! Great meal for around 560 calories (chicken or veg), which is what I budget for lunch and dinner (500-600 calories)

Of course, it's always better to make it at home and control what goes into your food. Also, you can request to leave out meat, cheese, and/or condiments like sour cream to lower the calories even more.

But if you can't get home and you must eat out, it's a good idea to know what are the better options ahead of time, before getting there and staring at a menu while obsessively hungry. Knowing better options at 3-5 restaurants and fast food places can help someone grab something on the go without being tempted with the unhealthiest options. Also, all chain restaurants/fast food places are supposed to have nutritional information available upon request. Look at that instead of a menu to make a last-minute decision.

I like the fresco (hard shell) tacos. Delicious, filling, not a lot of calories. I also sometimes get their fresco bean burrito. FILLING, full of fiber and only 350 calories. Add a bottle of water, and a piece of fruit, and you've got lunch!
