Playing vs watching the game

Wednesday, May 01, 2013

Aside for the never-ending winter I'm experiencing here in Manitoba, things are going very well for me in Sparkville. My attitude toward food and exercise has changed a great deal. I've been quietly lurking around these boards, even avoiding putting up a webpage until recently. The thought of "putting myself out there" is rather threatening to me. However, since I have ventured in a little further -- I have "met" some fabulous people who share ideas and day to day things which have proven to be very comforting and helpful!

I recently purchased some hoops. Yup -- hula hoops! I discovered a couple of vlogs on here and felt great joy just watching someone else do it. Finally, the light went on and I thought -- "What's stopping me from joining the fun?" Then I had an epiphany: "Am I going to stay on the side-lines of life or am I going to listen & learn and forge ahead to participate?" Just like the lurking in the background here. Sure it was "safe" in my eyes, but look at all I was missing!

And so it begins.... I will work at being a participant instead of a spectator! As far as the new hoops go though -- it will be awhile before I can say I'm a "hooper!" Like the rest of the Spark philosophy though -- one step at a time. Practise becomes habit.

Thank you to everyone for your openness and ideas. Keep spreading the Spark!

Had I realized you were CANADIAN!!!

Hahaha! I think attitudes are contageous and I like yours. Plan to stalk you a bit and get to know you. Ottawa tulip festival has started but late blooming but my dafodils are pretty much done now. Love the hoops. Keep at it. DD did hoops for a while and I threw away the damaged one she had... had bumps all over it... OK it was cracked too. LOL. As for my dress (if you read this, yup, even wearing no bra makes it fit better.. but makes me look more like a sack of potatoes... so hopefully my continued efforts to firm up all over will be the best way to make the dress look good. I will consider posting a picture. Justyna

Hi! I liked your blog. I too am inclined to watch from the sidelines, and like you I find there's good reason to jump in and participate. And on Spark it's manageable - I can shut it down when I need a break. (tho I'm more likely to stay on Spark too long and get too little sleep...) There are some wonderful folks using this site; they provide help and comfort, as you say. So thank you for putting yourself out there and for sharing your page and blogs.

One of the things I love about SparkPeople is that the folks here are interested in personal growth - and that is EXACTLY what you're doing, too! Moving out of our comfort zones and doing something new, whether it is participating instead of lurking, buying hula hoops, or trying beets for the first time, ALL are personal growth opportunities.

So glad to be on this adventure with such fun folks!

Brrrr! It is great to stretch your boundaries and step out of the box. I love doing Zumba and that is totally public and I simply don't care what anyone thinks of my hip swiveling. In fact, a woman came up to me and I thought she was going to compliment my moves instead she said, "You look like you are having fun." Not a bad thing I guess but not exactly the compliment I yearned for.

I know there are hula hoop dvds out there and of course the hula hoop vlogger on sparkpeople. I think we all have to find the exercises that speak to us and feel like fun not work. emoticon emoticon

Good for you for dancing er hula hooping like nobody is watching!
