Today is day 21 of my current streak!
At one time or another, you've probably said (or heard someone else say) "I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse." I used to say that too...and usually it REALLY meant "I'm so hungry, I'm going to eat LIKE a horse!" And then I would eat a lot of unhealthy, fattening food. No wonder I ended up weighing 286 lbs!
But since I got on track last year, I've changed my ways. Now, if I'm hungry between meals, I ask myself "Are you hungry enough to eat an apple?" If the answer is NO, then I know its not really hunger. I may be bored, or stressed, or just having a craving. So instead of eating, I do a quick workout...maybe a few crunches, or dumb bell curls, or a bit of yoga. I try to always remember that there are other alternatives than turning to food when I'm not hungry. And it doesn't HAVE to be exercise. Here are some other things I do when I'm bored, stressed or dealing with a craving;
1. Clean out a drawer. You'd be surprised how distracting it can be to clean out your socks drawer or a kitchen drawer!
2. Go to my personal journal. Sometimes it helps to write down what I'm feeling. And it ALWAYS helps to read stuff I've written at other times of struggle.
3. Take a nap. I set the alarm for 20 minutes, put on my sleep mask and some soft music and relax. I don't always fall asleep, but sometimes just resting is all that I need.
4. Work on a paint by numbers kit. You can't eat and paint at the same time, lol.
I have found that if I can distract myself for 15 to 20 minutes, I will get over wanting to eat when I'm not hungry. Give it a try, it might work for you too!
But sometimes when I ask myself "Are you hungry enough to eat an apple?" , the answer is a big old YES. So you know what I do when that happens? I eat an apple!
