I'm So Hungry I Could Eat An Apple!

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Today is day 21 of my current streak!

At one time or another, you've probably said (or heard someone else say) "I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse." I used to say that too...and usually it REALLY meant "I'm so hungry, I'm going to eat LIKE a horse!" And then I would eat a lot of unhealthy, fattening food. No wonder I ended up weighing 286 lbs!

But since I got on track last year, I've changed my ways. Now, if I'm hungry between meals, I ask myself "Are you hungry enough to eat an apple?" If the answer is NO, then I know its not really hunger. I may be bored, or stressed, or just having a craving. So instead of eating, I do a quick workout...maybe a few crunches, or dumb bell curls, or a bit of yoga. I try to always remember that there are other alternatives than turning to food when I'm not hungry. And it doesn't HAVE to be exercise. Here are some other things I do when I'm bored, stressed or dealing with a craving;

1. Clean out a drawer. You'd be surprised how distracting it can be to clean out your socks drawer or a kitchen drawer!

2. Go to my personal journal. Sometimes it helps to write down what I'm feeling. And it ALWAYS helps to read stuff I've written at other times of struggle.

3. Take a nap. I set the alarm for 20 minutes, put on my sleep mask and some soft music and relax. I don't always fall asleep, but sometimes just resting is all that I need.

4. Work on a paint by numbers kit. You can't eat and paint at the same time, lol.

I have found that if I can distract myself for 15 to 20 minutes, I will get over wanting to eat when I'm not hungry. Give it a try, it might work for you too!

But sometimes when I ask myself "Are you hungry enough to eat an apple?" , the answer is a big old YES. So you know what I do when that happens? I eat an apple!

    I'm not all that fond of apples in their whole state, and slicing them up to sprinkle on some cinnamon is so much work. I shall need to find a substitute fruit. Though, I do quite often feel hungry enough to eat a peach, or nectarine, or plum, or cherries, or maybe some bell peppers (Yes plural... I can definitely sit and eat sliced bell peppers from the second I wake up to the second I go to bed like some people eat chips)

    That is a good way to look at it. I didn't think of that. It is always nice to get ideas from other people because we do not all think a like and I've gotten lots of ideas from others that I never would have thought of and have heard the same from others at times when I come up with something. Thanks for the idea! emoticon

    Some really good advice - I often confuse thirst for hunger - I also try to drink if I crave food and then if in ten minutes if I am still hungry then I try to figure out why. The other thing - It actually doesn't kill me to be a little hungry = well not at my weight it doesn't.
I might have to stock up on a few more apples!!

    Loved your Blog. I work out or do something creative. I just need to keep myself fixed on something other than food. My cravings usually hit me after 7pm at night. I don't know why but they do. Last night I grabbed a book and found a comfortable place to relax and read. Then it was time for bed.
I too use fruit to eat in place of other high sugar items. I also like baby carrots.

    My favorite thing to do when I'm hungry is take a nap. I even wrote a "secret of success" about it. By the time I get up, I am not hungry anymore.

Regarding being hungry enough to eat an apple: I have to use this logic. I don't like apples, so this concept would work for me. If I was really hungry enough, I guess I would eat an apple. But not an orange, so figure that out! ha ha
