Mushroom "ing"

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

How many of you like to look for mushrooms during this time of year? They are selling for $35 a pound at a local store! Yep, you read that correctly, $35 lb!

We went out yesterday after several days of a nice steady rain and found about 2 pounds of mushrooms! We were so happy because the woods we look in (which are ours) have been slowly producing less and less. We know there are trespassers back there, we've seen their cars parked on side of road sometimes when we're coming home. If we "catch" them, we let them know they are trespassing and to please leave, especially when we love mushrooms and these are our woods and that is what we enjoy doing for only one week out of every year. So, here I sit with a plate of fabulous big yellows (morels) and slices of tomato, the smell makes me want to go find more, the weather is beautiful and I'm a happy girl. Where do you live and do you enjoy this activity? Do you have a special recipe for these types of mushrooms?

I know people who "hunt mushrooms" but have never done it myself. My parents live on a heavily wooded lot with several acres so really should do this on their land when I visit. Thanks for the info!

I don't eat mushrooms if I don't have to and I would be scared of picking the bad ones! My husband likes them but he wouldn't go out looking for them-too much work for him. Glad you can get them free since you do enjoy them!

My gram used to pick mushrooms and I remember one type that she picked that looked like a big soft molasses cookie. top, brown and underside spongy and tan. She made a soup and used to say that the woods here in Maine are like those in Poland where she came from in 1914. I do not collect wild because of fear of getting a bad one emoticon

I love mushrooms. I was never taught how to find them, and which are safe so I buy from store. I can only imagine how wonderful fresh from the woods would be. I do have some wild berries I enjoy from my woods in Minnesota. I live in Missouri this time of year and people are talking about gathering them. I sincerely hope they have the property owners permission. I am not. Comfortable with trespassor in any situation. Happy hunting and enjoy.

We don't have mushrooms where we live, I love them cooked but not raw. I don't have any particular recipes using them but add them to a lot of dishes including veggies.
Love the picture!!!!
