Sleep Journal day 3

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

After weeks of sleep problems I seem to be doing better. Last night I got a full eight hours of sleep. Of course I did wake up and 3 AM for a while and after about 15 minutes I gave up and turned on my reading light and read. As usual I had to wake up to use the bathroom and then couldn't get back to sleep for a while. I have been spending a lot of time outside each day so maybe that is helping.

You're right about the bathroom; especially as we get older. I did follow the suggestion to not turn on a bright light and just used the dim fan light in the bathroom last night and was able to go right back to sleep. That really helped.

There are lots of us who have to get up during the night to go to the bathroom...gggrrrrr It doesn't matter how early you stop drinking anything before bed too. It sounds like you're headed in the right direction!

The Sleep Journal" is part of the action steps for the "official Better Sleep Challenge" which I joined a few days ago in desperation after having to face playing piano in church after a night of only 2 or 3 hours of sleep. I and the church survived with no drastic consequences but it is a responsibility I don't take lightly and doing it on so little sleep was rather unsettling. I went home after church, had lunch and spent the afternoon sleeping! I think it may help if I do it as instructed as you're supposed to keep track of a good many things as well as your hours of sleep. I'll try to do better with the next one.

Do you feel like keeping a sleep journal will help your sleep? I struggle with sleep, as well, but haven't considered keeping a sleep journal!

Millie and Debbie, I so understand. I am trying to get back to a normal sleep pattern but it has been so long I don't know what is normal. As I said before TV off at 11:30pm after news. to bed at 12 mn after spark tracking... Sleeping pills (Restoril and Trazodone) and I still wake up at 2:30 pm almost as if it is normal. I have tried to limit my water intake but it doesn't make much different and since I am dehydrated all the time... I can't really limit it. some days I do get almost 8 hours but not all at the same time. Bummer, but we are gonna beat this monster. I worked 7pm to 7am for over 10 years and I blame that monster too. Edna

Actually that is how I counted it., I slept from 9 PM to 3 AM and then from about 5 AM to 7 AM. That makes 8 hours. I can't hope to sleep all night without having to go to the bathroom because I have chronic kidney disease and that is one of the symptoms. Thanks though for your interest and for sharing.

I started a sleep journal myself. I want to get a fitbit so I can have it do the tracking- I figure it would be more accurate then my journal.
I don't count a full nights sleep if I have to get up & go to the bathroom or get up & read because that's not sleeping.
What I do is write down when I go to bed & then when I go to sleep. I try to do this by turning off light, but sometimes I sleep with light on. If I wake up & get up to go to bathroom, I note the time & write it down. Then if I read I note the time. This is how I keep track & not count more sleep hours then I actually got.
Best Wishes
Debbie
