Stiff Muscles!

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

Never fails to surprise me how stiff my arms and shoulders (and butt) feel after the first few rounds of golf each spring.

I work 'em all at the gym.

I did more XC skiing than ever this past winter. Great upper AND lower body workout.

So how come I'm so stiff this morning after 9 holes Sunday, 9 holes last night?

Golf is supposed to be a "walk in the park" right? I do walk. And I pull my clubs on a cart (don't carry, don't ride a cart). Walking briskly however! And probably swinging way too many times . . . because I'm not a great golfer. (It's about the birds. The butterflies. The flowers. The big sky. The tiny details too. And incidentally, golf!)

So . . . it'll be fun to see how many rounds it takes (of course I generally play 18) before I feel in my "golfing form" and free of DOMS. I'm betting about 2 weeks . . . .

A bit of tonic water with of lime helps me with sore muscles. Soon your body will be re-accustomed to the return to your warmer weather activities.

How wonderful it is that you absorb and enjoy your surroundings while you are active.

Every form of exercise uses different muscles so I'm not surprised at all!

Sorry about the DOMS! Sending massaging, healing and warm thoughts your way!
The beauty on a golf course would be distracting. Using a wii to practise over the winter sounds like a good idea -something to think about. A minor spring set back here -little bit of snow and freezing cold -down to -10 tonight but is supposed to recover to normal by Friday. Hopefully, that was winter's last gasp. They are comparing how late its getting before any golf courses are planning to open here compared to last year. Longest winter on record, its now official.
Feel better soon!! Hopefully it will not take two weeks. But do try to find some warm up and stretching exercises that will help those poor body parts!

I never played golf, but I imagine it uses slightly different muscles than just walking, or cross-country skiing. Enjoy!

Change of activity types, like changing sets in weight training... a period of adjustment. But a joyous one if you love golf, huh? Enjoy!

It is interesting how different activities make you FEEL it! Even when you're in good shape. I love it when you discover that you've activated a whole 'nuther set when you try something new. Have fun getting back into golfing shape!

Do you play WII golf in the winter? My guess is your muscles are well worked, but it's the motion that's getting you. The swinging action for golf isn't really replicated in any other activity other than maybe squash and racket ball if you're doing some crazy saves. Could be wrong...

Good way of assessing your spring fitness, hmmm?

I usually find stretching helps ease my DOMS.

And enjoy the spring!!!

Wishing you deep, deep relaxation; hot baths and stretching and mental relaxation, too. Feeling really good. I admire your golfing. I guess that stiffness just lets us know we've done something different and good for our bodies. Yeah, at one time I thought that when I got fit I wouldn't have DOMS any more. But that definitely hasn't happened. Each new activity or even slight variations brings some soreness. (Of course, I'm rehabbing an injury right now - that's a bit different. I'm thinking I overdid hill work.) Sounds to me like you know you didn't injure yourself, you are just awakening muscles to serving you in a new way this season. Sounds very healthy!!

I find every new exercise or sport I do, even if it is one I've done before but have had a break from, creates muscle soreness!

It's funny how different activities work different muscles. Even such related activities as Spinning and Road Cycling! Every year my return to road cycling requires a bit of adjustment that surprises me. Usually I find road cycling more challenging, even if I AM a messy pile of sweat after Spinning! Although this year was better than previous years...I gave my Spin Instructor a thumbs up yesterday and said: "You must be working us harder! I hardly had to downshift at ALL when I hit the road for 24 miles yesterday!" :-)

I can't figure out why I have stiff muscles also sometimes as I work out all week. I think it is age.

Gold courses are some of the most beautiful places. I know you will get into golfing shape in these next two weeks.
