Today is day 19 of my current streak!

My birthday was on Sunday, and I was really blessed to get so many goodies and sweet messages on my page to wish me a happy day. I'm 52 now! But if its true that you are only as old as you feel, then I guess I can say I'm only 35 or so, lol.

In addition to the goodies and messages, I also got a few cards in the mail, and some gifts too! One of my gifts was quite a surprise. It was from a friend of mine who has never been supportive of my weight loss efforts. But she found a workout DVD at a yard sale, and since she thought I'd like it, she bought it and sent it to me. Its this one;

I have to tell you....the "Fat Burning Big Ball Workout" segment kicked my butt! It was actually lots of fun, but it was hard. In no time at all, it had me sweating and panting. It really got my heart rate up. (And it got my thighs burning, lol.) Its a 30 minute workout, but I was only able to do 18 minutes before I had to stop. I was exhausted, but feeling great.

It doesn't make me feel bad at all that I couldn't get through the entire 30 minute workout. Even though I've been working out regularly since March 1, 2012, I have to admit that I skimp a lot on cardio. For some reason, I just do NOT like doing cardio. Give me yoga or strength training any day, and I'll do it and come back for more. Tell me to do cardio, and I'll avoid it like the plague! So although I've gotten quite strong and flexible over the past year, I haven't really been much of a cardio bunny. Perhaps thats one of the reasons I've been at a plateau for so long?

Anyway, I've decided to start doing cardio on a regular basis, and this workout is just what I needed. Difficult, but fun! Hubby was actually laughing at me while I was doing the workout because he thought I looked funny doing it. I laughed too, actually, because some of the moves made me feel silly...but trust me, this was a WORKOUT. And even though I wasn't able to finish it today, I'm not bummed. This is just my starting point. I know if I stick with it, I'll get better and before long I WILL be able to finish. I just need to give myself time to improve!

In the past, if I tried a workout and couldn't finish it, I would feel so discouraged, and like I was a failure. And then I'd give up. I never gave myself a chance to get better at it. I never gave myself enough time to make progress. But now I know that I just need to keep going, and as long as I don't quit I will eventually succeed. So I look forward to getting better and better at this workout.

But just from the portion I did today, I can tell my thighs are going to be sore tomorrow!

If you are struggling with a workout (or just struggling to start working out in the first place), don't give up. Start where you are and put forth your best effort...and give yourself a chance to get better and better. It won't happen over night, but it WILL happen as long as you don't give up!

    Love all your motivational pictures and quotes. Way to go! I need to get to the point where I don't feel discouraged for not being able to finish a workout. I am especially bad at it when I feel like I should be able to do it because I was able to do that much when I was in shape but now I can't do as much anymore. But I love your positive attitude. Thanks for sharing!

    Such a good blog!! I have the opposite problem you have. I love cardio and can't seem to get into strengrth training. I know I need both. I have a ventral hernia (abdomen) and I'm unable to do any kind of crunches or ab work and I think that discourages me from even trying strength training because so much of it involves ab work. Like I checked out the video you were given and there is a whole section on lower body and ab work. I am just going to have to dig in and find workouts that don't involve abs and get started. You are so encouraging!! Your blogs are always motivating and full of wisdom!

    I've just found this blog. First of all I must wish you a belated Happy Birthday. Secondly thank you for posting this. I've done some cardio that has had me puffing, panting and sweating and wondering just how much more I can do so it's great to read that I'm not the only one who cannot always get to the end of an exercise dvd. Good for you, though, that you are trying and making progress.

Secondly -- great post! I also love the last quote on there about in 30 days you will either be blown away at your progress -- or not. How true is that?

    I'm with you - I don't mind that I can't get through something the first few times or if I get a giggle out of my hubby or sons. Because when I do get there it simply feels awesome that I did!

And kudos to your buds - knowing you want to be healthier and helping you out with gifts that make a difference. Happy Belated B-day!

    That is touching that your friend sent you the DVD! You must have impressed her I think!
Maybe you can start doing more cardio by taking walks or bike rides and see those as me-time, time to just think and daydream and be away from everything. If you have a nice environment like a park or woods that helps, too.
