Dr. appointment

Monday, April 29, 2013

I ran out of the pain patches that the emergency room gave me for my pain. I only have a few Meloxicam left. I called for a refill and the pharmacist said the ER doesn't refill, I would have to see my Dr. I called the ER and told them the next appointment available with the Dr.,not the PA was June 7. The ER Dr. got me an appointment for this morning at 8:30am. I don't like early morning appointments, but beggars can't be choosers. Since it was open, I guess no one like early morning appointments. Still, I got there for 8:30, I saw the Dr. at 9:45 and it I got home at 11. This is a very busy busy orthopedic office.

He is sending me for physical therapy. That is about what I expected. I have 4 pinched nerves in my neck. This Dr. doesn't deal with backs. He did look at the X-rays and did see more disc degeneration. He said he can send me to a pain specialist, who I have already seen and did not like at all. This Dr. gives needles in the back. NO emoticon I will use the patches and anti-inflammatories. He did talk to me about my knees and about knee replacement. I told him I was doing okay with water exercise and the supartz shots. I am due for another go round with the shots. It has been a year. I didn't realize that. He did say fine, but warned that we can't keep doing shots indefinitely. I sort of felt he was pushing the surgery. He did say however, that the numbness in my face has nothing to do with my pinched nerves in my neck in his opinion.

This will be the course of action. Six weeks of physical therapy. He did write instructions for aquatic exercises since I do belong to the pool We are going to do another 3 shots in 3 weeks with the knees. Of course that has to be approved through the insurance. That should not be a problem. He has suggested that I see an optomologist. He thinks the numbness in my face could have something to do with my eyes. If that is not the case, he suggests an ENT. At the end of 6 weeks, I will call the Dr. make an appointment for another MRI and meet with the Dr. to discuss the results. While I am in physical therapy I am not to do any exercise not approved by the physical therapist. I am not to lift anything heavier than 2 pounds. I shouldn't be taking the stairs unless it is absolutely necessary. I live on the third floor.

Until I start physical therapy, which is not until May 6 I am not to do anything strenuous. I already have a homemaker 5.5 hours a week for grocery shopping and such. I am disabled and live on the third floor. He has called the state and said I need a health aid for 14 hours a week to be here for showers and such. I need a homemaker for another 12 hours for housework. He doesn't want me doing anything, even laundry. That is taking heavy clothes out of the washer and it is bending. The health aid will be here when I take my shower in case I need help. I am not going to have someone give me a shower. She will help me down the stairs and drive me to physical therapy. I am waiting to hear from my case manager to see if this is going to be approved.

I hope I get the same physical therapist I had last time Robert. He was amazing. I really liked him. He was easy to work with.

emoticon My heart goes out to you. Not only are you in pain and trying to deal with that, but having to deal with insurance, doctors, aides and trying to get fuller coverage takes a toll. Hang in there. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

There have been SO many advances made in knee replacements now than even just 10 years ago. A dear family friend had both knees done at the same time. Yes, he was in some pain, but when we asked if he regretted having the surgery, he said He** NO!! I'm kicking myself because I should've done it sooner. I would've too, if I'd known how much better I'dve felt!! Even with post surgical pain, he STILL felt better after having knee replacement surgery. He was back sailing within the year. Ask the doctor any questions you might have. Keep a notpad and a pen near the computer, and when you think of a question or a concern, write it down. You can ask the PT questions, too, like exactly what you can and cannot do. Hang in there Bonnie!!

I hope you get approved for everything since obviously it is important and the damn insurance companies should see that. I'll say prayers for you that you get the help you need, get a proper diagnosis and a quick recovery. Definitely do as the Doctor ordered - especially until you start to feel better. My thoughts are with you. emoticon
