Every year Eric and I try to go hiking at least a few times. Yesterday was the first for this year. We had heard about some great trails on Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks, which also include a quartz field not too far off the trail, so it would have been a win-win to find some nice quartz to use for personal use or for Eric to wrap for jewelry for his business. So we put together some packs with food, water, and other necessities of hiking, put the leash on our husky Lilith, and headed up to the Adirondacks.
It was a gorgeous day! Highs were expected around 70, even up in the mountains, so we were ready for a super day. 2 hour drive later we pull into the parking lot for the trailhead, get our packs on and head out. Of course the first thing we saw was a sign that said "No dogs"... oh well, we weren't leaving we'd take our chances, she wasn't coming off the leash so she wouldn't be a bother. We couldn't find any sign for the trailhead we had found on the internet so we picked one of the many others and started out. It wasn't too bad at first, but this old body had a hard time with some of the inclines! We did stop periodically for water, rest, and snacks which were all very welcome to me. It was beautiful up there but with it still being early spring the trails were really in bad shape with run-off, mud, and up to 2 feet of snow in some places! Needless to say, it was rough hiking in some spots! And I discovered that my waterproof boots aren't so waterproof anymore!
The hike up took us about 4 hours and covered about 2 or 2 1/2 miles. Probably about half way through that my legs stopped wanting to work and it was a struggle to lift my feet (thank god for the walking stick we found!)... but despite it, I did make it. We were trying to find a linked trailhead to make our way back down but we just couldn't find it and as it was getting late in the day we turned around and made our way back down the mountain... Those 2 miles only took 2 hours... so we had a really full day of hiking!!
Today, my body hurts and I am wiped out but I did it. I survived. And the next nice weekend when we have nothing else planned, we will go out again!
