The Saga of the Steps

Monday, April 29, 2013

Even though today was "rest day" for me (and my totem animal is the sloth, so rest day's practically a religious observance), I went to the mall with my daughter. I checked the Fitbit as we were leaving - a measly 1K steps~! This surprised me, as a trip to the mall usually results in way more steps than that. But my kid said we hadn't really walked around much, so I didn't think much of it.
At home, I realized Sloth Day wasn't really making me happy (unprecedented, btw), so I took the dog out. The air smelled really good after a rainy day and night yesterday, so I figured I'd make it a real walk and do the long loop. And if I just added some "long cuts" to that 7K step loop, I might get close to 10K.
Near the end of the walk, I check the Fitbit again: only 500 more steps than at the mall!~ !!! I thought, Oh No, the Fitbit's malfunctioning! I sort of goggled at it for awhile and then realized the readout was telling me calories burned, not steps taken! I clicked over to steps, and....SHOCK AND AWE! 13K steps!
So I'm happy.
Here's the thing about it, too. The reason I got off the couch even on designated sloth day, was that sitting doing nothing wasn't making me happy. This is a seachange for me. I'm thinking maybe my habits are actually making a shift into "activity = normal". Imagine that.

I didn't have a sloth day, but a very active one, riding bikes, doing bootcamp workouts, etc. So I went on the treadmill for 30 minutes thinking I only needed 3800 steps, that should be enough. Lo and behold, I was at 9276 when I finished. Can't do that. So I walked around my living room and kitchen for 800 steps and it only registered 400. Then another 500 and only 250. Here I was at 9962 and I walked another 100 steps and it read 9964. Really? Finally did another 50 steps and it was accurate. Crazy! Glad you had such a great day! The title of your post really drew me in as I just finished! WAY TO GO! emoticon

Small decisions to get up... make the biggest differences in the end! Yay for mistakes that work out to your advantage; keep it up!
