Garden is planted!

Sunday, April 28, 2013

We had a labor intense weekend of planting. Yesterday we finally made up our mind on planting a weeping redbud in the front yard. I also planted honey suckle, my mom always had it in her yard and I just always loved it.

Day 91: Dogs spent a lot of time on the porch watching us plant. Poor dogs weren't couch surfing. The mailman came by tried giving them treats and he said they snarled at him like great white sharks lol He said he will be whistling the theme song to jaws from now on.

Then came the garden. Our aim was really to get the garden going. We decided to rip up this area next to the house that was just mulched. Guess why it had nothing there???

Day 92: What you find when u start digging, not even deep. A door to the sewage line. So we outlined the door in edging and filled it in. What was gonna be a giant root veggie garden is now half herbs cuz they don't go too deep. Oh well better than having 5 million pots of herbs. The area wasnt touched for yrs because there was huge silver maple roots on top of it and that tree is 40 ft away.

Day 93: We finally got our garden finished today. So we have our deep ground veggies (onions, garlic, carrots, 3 kinds of potatoes, celery and sunflowers) and herb (so far dill and cilantro). Our garden by the compost is sprawling veggies like watermelon, cantelope, and squash. Then in my raised bed tomatoes and lots of them, peppers, eggplant, Bok Choy, Kohlrabi, Swiss Chard, eggplant and Lacinato kale). Then we started strawberries in a long planted and we got a patio tomato going.

I still need get more seeds for the herb garden and I wanna get some asparagus bulbs to plants for the years to come.

My dance class went from sunday to saturday now and she is cutting way back due to her pregnancy. Which is so good cuz everyone was worried for her trying to teach 3 classes in a row. The new woman taking over the lifting class is kinda nuts I hear. Someone told me she has you do push ups with your feet off the ground. Yeah right. Gotta find a new plan for lifting. Big lifting classes probably arent a great idea. I get injured way too easy. Back to my own thing I guess. I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

I got the herbs planted and need to mulch them today as I hate to weed. Hubby made us a nice number sign for by the inner gate and I will put it out tonight. I hope we can get the rest of the perennials planted today.

I am allergic to honeysuckle so we have to pull it up all the time. It is very invasive so be sure you plant it where you want it. We have problems with lemon balm growing everywhere. And Russian Olive we are fighting.

So funny about the dogs!!! I think most of them hate the mailman. Our scottie loved everyone but the neighbor next door and the mailman. LOL.

Our asparagus didn't do very well this year. The drought last year caused a lot of damage here.

I'm envious of your garden being in! My yard is a mess and in need of considerable rehabilitation before we even start thinking garden. Hoping to get in a few hours today.
