If was beautiful here this weekend so I worked in the flower beds all weekend. I have been looking 5 years for a dwarf Japanese Maple and just didn't like the shapes of the ones that I had seen. Finally found one at our local nursery and brought it home. I put it in the flower bed in the front of my house and it frames the fountain nicely. This variety only gets 4-6 ft tall so I like that about it. Then it was weeding the flower bed that runs up along the driveway. My mom is always looking for ground covers to cut back on weeding so I don't know if this was a ground cover gone crazy or an aggressive weed. Whatever it was it took over and was smothering the rest of the plants. The bulbs were even having a hard time pushing up through it. Got most of it out, now just have to keep an eye open and pull any stragglers that we missed. Too bad it was so aggressive because it had pretty white flowers. It is really thick behind the house and it forms almost like a thin mat when it spreads. I think what I will do there is dig up all the bulbs and then cut the weed back really short and spray with a weed killer. Hopefully that will keep it from coming back there.
Next major project in the yard is the veggie bed. Want to put in a bigger veggie garden so have to dig up one of my flower beds. It will work well for veggies because it is only 3 ft wide. I mainly have daffodils and tulips in there with a few daylilies and iris's so won't be too bad to dig them up. Will use the daffodils and tulips to fill in the front of the house and down the driveway to give it a big pop of color in the spring. So I know what I will be doing on nice evenings when I get home from work. It just feels so good to get my hands back in the dirt.
