Camping Fun with the Family

Sunday, April 28, 2013

I woke up this morning from a sleep marathon! We had a wonderful time camping, but shortly after getting home yesterday morning I started getting a migraine headache. I think it was set off by all the junk food I ate the night before (my body isn’t accustomed to it anymore). I took my migraine med and went to bed for a “nap” but the nap turned into much more. I slept all day and night! At least this morning my headache is gone and I feel completely rested.

As for our night of camping, we had a great time. We went with Tommy’s son Derek, his wife Sonya, and their kids, Landon and Lindsay. We went to Pilot Mountain and set up our tents. I had a large Eureka tent that I bought when my boys were little. We’ve spent many fun nights camping in it with my kids in the southwest and in North Carolina. Now that my boys are grown, Tommy and I have downsized to a smaller tent and I gave my large tent to Derek and Sonya so that they can enjoy it with their children. It’s hard to believe it’s over 20 years old and still in good shape.

My tent that I hope will be enjoyed by our grandkids as much as I enjoyed it with my kids. All set up and ready for bedtime!

Not bedtime yet, but Landon had to get in and check out the tent. He was so excited about it.

After setting up camp we drove to the top of the mountain and took a short hike to look at the pinnacle.

It was a beautiful day!

Papaw Tommy walking with his little buddy, Landon.

We later fixed dinner consisting of hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans and chips. Not exactly on the heart healthy menu, but everyone enjoyed it. As the temperatures cooled, we built a campfire and told stories. We made smores for the kids, but of course the adult “kids” had some also. Later Sonya made Jiffy Pop over the campfire. Landon and Lindsay had never seen it before and was really excited watching it pop.

Enjoying Jiffy Pop by the campfire.

I liked this picture. The smoke from the campfire makes it look foggy.

We had a great time and hope we can go again soon. Now I have to start packing for our vacation next week. Tommy and I will be flying to New Mexico on the 6th for ten days of camping and hiking with my sister and we are so excited.

I hope you all had a great weekend. Keep working toward your goals!

That looks like so much fun. We did a lot of camping when we were kids. My Mom and Dad loved fishing and boating, water skiing and Dad loved to cook for us when we ended the physical activities. This reminds me of all the fun we had then. Thanks for sharing the wonderful photos. I can feel Landon's excitement. I bet Pawpa enjoyed this time! emoticon

We are just now planning our first camping trip of the season and I am getting excited about it! Really enjoyed your pictures and the story about your tent. We have been tenting for a long time and have a couple of tents. We bought a camper last year but have decided to take the tent on our first time out this year! Sounds like you had a great time!

Thanks for letting us enjoy your camping trip. Every now and then my migraine meds do that to me - take one and go for a nap and end up sleeping soundly for a good long time. Oh well, maybe the migraines are telling us something there. Looks like you had a great time and enjoyed yourselves. Have a great Sunday.

I have the camping bug so bad right now. I need to get my stuff out and go on a weekend. So many places close to me to camp. I loved the pics and those special experiences shared with the grandkids is so much fun. I hope they get many years of fun out of that tent with so any memories in it!

Have to hear about your camping and hiking here in NM after you get here!

What a great description of a lovely trip. Glad the tent is good for passing down in the family. And, you know they say, kids entering college now have never seen popcorn come from anyplace but the microwave. What a treat to show folks the old Jiffy Pop! Thanks for the lovely pictures and the story.
