Planning ahead

Today's Spark Coach challenge is to plan for tomorrow's meals. I am a planner, at least when it comes to dinner. I like to have my plans made so I don't have to dream up a dinner on the spot. Now, I may change my mind but it eases my mind to know I have a plan. It also helps me manage what I buy and freeze as well as any leftovers we might have. All in all it's a winning strategy.

I tend not to really plan breakfast but it will either be oatmeal or cold cereal. It's my spontaneous moment when I choose between the two.

Lunch, ah there's the problem. Sometimes I just don't stop eating till dinner. I just grab a little here and a little there. Of course we know how that tends to work out.

Now that I have been eating a rainbow of fruits and veggies everyday, that often informs what I eat for breakfast somewhat but definitely for lunch. I tend more to have a fruit or vegetable salad or maybe soup.

My plan for tomorrow is to make Beef Stew. I will put carrots and peas in there for sure so I have orange and green covered. Breakfast will be oatmeal (I had cold cereal for breakfast today) with blueberries plus some pineapple mixed with blackberries on the side. That takes care of blue, purple and yellow. That leaves red so I think I will use one of the tomatoes. I'll enjoy that with a tuna sandwich so I can put more protein in my day and also have some of that cauliflower (raw) in the refrigerator. I haven't put this all in the nutrition tracker yet so I will do so and then plan any snacks.

I may really like this idea though I know from planning dinners that some times it is easier to do than other times. Do you plan ahead?

    emoticon I love eating across the rainbow too! It doesn't always happen, but when I do make a point of planning ahead it totally works! Yesterday I planned out all my meals for today. Tonight I plan on writing out the whole week of menus and then my shopping list. Good luck with your plans!

    I plan some. Breakfast is easy - one of my standard breakfasts -oatmeal, toast with peanut butter, egg whites with salsa. Lunch during the work week is usually planned - water, string cheese, yogurt, carrots or some other veggie, apple, protein bar (the Pepsi is a weakness I give in to when I don't get enough sleep). Dinner is usually meat and a salad for me and add a potato for my husband. Fresh baked pie (request from husband when we are home for dinner together - he works shift work so we don't have many meals together) for dessert can also be hard to pass.

Is there a list of the rainbow foods? I can do red, blue, orange, green OK, but what about other colors? Also what are your favorite choices in each color?

    I am a planner. I usually have my veggies cleaned for the week and my lunches ready for the week. I also have my clothes for work ready for the week on Sunday for the entire week ironed and ready to go, that includes the jewelry that I am going to wear with them. I have my gym bag packed and ready to go as well. Each night I unpack my lunch bag and repack and place in the frig so the only thing I need to do is put the ice packs in. I also pack my gym bag so it's ready to go. We usually go to the Y or walk outside on two days a week we do strength training on our lunch hour.
If I get this done every night everything goes smooth in the morning.

    I smile as I read this since you and I have been on this same page for a while. The goal of eating that rainbow, does spur the plan and I love that it does. When I fly by the seat of my pants, I often can look at what I've eaten at the end of the day and be planning, even if it semi informal and rainbow based is my good thing!

    Other than for special occaions such as holidays or company for dinner I don't....many of my meals are by the seat of my pants -- which leads to bland-looking "rainbows" and sometimes less than balanced meals. I should try being more mindful and actually planning my meals day by day. I think you are on to something!
