Too late to stop GMO salmon?!

Saturday, April 27, 2013

Did you know that the government was taking comments on whether to allow genetically modified salmon to be marketed? But the comment period ended April 26-yesterday! Argghh!

These salmon are larger and grow faster than normal salmon. There is every indication that they would over power the native salmon and wipe them out. The companies that want to promote the GMO salmon say they will keep them contained in pens off shore. Like I believe that is even possible.

Salmon-300x125GE salmon have been altered to produce growth hormones at all times, allowing the fish to grow faster and bigger than natural salmon. The FDA has not conducted any safety testing, and merely assumes that the genetically engineered salmon is safe to eat.

The FDA has also not considered the potential ecological and economic impacts of approving genetically engineered salmon. Salmon are an integral part of the ecosystem, and the accidental escape of genetically engineered salmon could devastate populations of native salmon, as well as the fish and marine mammals that depend on salmon for their food. Scientists have predicted that escaped GE salmon would likely wipe out wild salmon populations, which will destroy the livelihood of coastal communities that depend on fishing.

EABL81...you're so right!! What a mess this whole GMO business has become. I'm just so annoyed about the implications if they ever go ahead with these salmon farms! Atlantic farm-raised is already a joke and unsafe so us east coasters rely on a good source of fish coming in from the pacific. I eat salmon 2-3 times a week and I know that what I've put in my skillet IS the real deal. and I want it to stay that way. I don't even order salmon in a restaurant anymore cause most times it's farm raised atlantic. emoticon emoticon

I was able to put my two cents in but I don't think they listen because all they want is money that they get from the companies that they approve for that stuff. They do not care if we get sick from this stuff.

Sadly, the ecological damages of GMO products never seem to be considered in these decisions. Claims that they can be contained are ridiculous. Just ask the small farmers that have been put out of business by large GM corporations because pollen from a neighboring farm pollinated their crops and introduced GM genes into their fields. The farmer then gets sued by the GM corporation for growing foods with GM genes.
