I met Eladio Utia for the first time in August of 2011.
My introduction on a warm evening in Pucallpa
It was he who made a comment about my becoming his "nuera" (daughter-in-law) even before Levi had a chance to get me alone to discuss why I SHOULD.
It was he, as a pastor, who blessed our informal union and commitment
(he's the one with the thinning hair, 2nd from the left, with his back to the camera)
During my trip to Peru last year, I think I spent the most time with him. He was a true spiritual father. He spurred me on to exercise as I tried to walk as much as he did. And we spent many a time reading and discussing scriptures and praying. He has been a devoted missionary and evangelist, as witness this little clip (it's in Spanish, and you have to turn up the volume) www.youtube.com/watch?v=
He has worked in carpentry, making furniture
as well as building the very house and bodega with his own hands (and a little help from his brother Armando and son, my Levi.) I was able to watch some of his work, along with Levi's son Josue www.youtube.com/watch?v=
So, today is his EIGHTY FIRST birthday, 2 days and 2 years younger than my dad would have been. I am SO blessed to have had last summer with him!
