Impromptu 5K

Saturday, April 27, 2013

I signed up for two 5Ks this month and ended up missing one because I was sick. The other one was last night, and I wasn't entirely sure I would do that one either mainly because I hadn't been training all that much, because I had been sick. My sister had also signed up but then wasn't going to do it because they were going to be visiting relatives. At the last minute, their plans changed and she would be running it, so I decided to run it with her.

And when I say "with her," I mean we hung out before and after and stood at the starting line together. She's been training hard and is determined to beat her best time. My only goal was to do the best I could.

I knew the route. I knew about that big hill. I've run it before. It's gradual for maybe a half mile and then steep for a short section. What I didn't know was that we were starting out through another hilly area, and there was another hilly area around 2.5 miles.

It was fun, and it was hard! My sister and I both started out too fast. She was GONE! I saw her sprint ahead and was determined to keep my eye on her. I felt like I was running faster than normal, but I also felt pretty good. Then came the hills. Oh my. Up and down and around the loop. I wasn't even through one song when I had to walk.

I tried to run at a more comfortable pace after that. But I still walked about every half mile. Allergies. Nose running like mad.

I had the best music though. Man, it really pumped me up. Trotting up that last hill, sun setting on the horizon, and Kelly Clarkson belting out "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!" I thought YEAH! I can do this!!!

I ran to the finish line, and there was my sister cheering me on. WOOHOO! Turns out she finished about 10 minutes before me! We're still not sure if she beat her best time. If not, she was at least very close.

My time was around 36 minutes. Not record-breaking but not too bad considering lack of training, sickness, allergies, and hills!

Next race: one week from today. I hope the weather will be as perfect as it was last night!
