Sunshine!

Friday, April 26, 2013

The snow is starting to melt and I can see more of the lawn every day. My path to the maple trees is still snow covered but at least it is not deeper than my knee high rubber boots any more. The sap has slowed a bit since last night didn't quite reach the freezing mark and I do have about a dozen jars of syrup made so that will supplement what I have on hand and give us pure maple syrup for the next year. Making maple syrup is a lot of work and takes fuel as well. Since I am doing only a few trees I am cooking it inside but at 40 to 1 sap to syrup there is a lot of steam in the process. I would like to cook it outside but my wood stove is down in the garden shed and with all the snow I can't really access it to set it up to boil syrup. Maybe next year.

You have had a long winter....spring has come and soon it will be the heat of summer here in Texas. Maple syrup...full of B vitamins.....not just sugar. I grew up in WV full of maple trees....never knew anyone in my circle of family and friends who made maple syrup...although my Grandmother told a story of her boys...my Dad being one of them who tapped and collected sap and she made syrup when her boys were in the scouts. I remember saying it was a lot of work. Enjoy your spring. emoticon emoticon

Spring hasn't made it to Kansas yet, although the snowy conditions appear to be gone. The sunshine would be nice. Maple syrup sounds great, and I hope that the snow will melt soon so that you can see your lawn.
