The first year

A year ago I read an article on Yahoo about a woman losing weight with the help of a website known as SparkPeople.com. I checked it out and officially joined April25, 2012.

Did I meet my weight loss goals? No, I didn't. That doesn't mean it has been an unsuccessful adventure. Far from it. It has been a learning experience and I know I have the power to meet my weight loss goals.

What have I learned? Well, I learned there's a connection between what you eat and how you feel. Duh! Should have figured that one out before. Eating "real" food makes you feel better than junk food. I learned I like vegetables. Even if they're cooked. I am looking forward to zucchini season this year. It's not just for bread anymore.

I've learned there are people out there who I have never met, but consider friends. People care about me. I disappeared for a little while and had people check on me to make sure I was okay.

I've learned I can get real exercise without going to the gym. I like going for walks, but always came up with excuses not to do it. Once you start, it gets easier to say yes. I've learned I can fit exercise in when I make it a priority.

Since my journey began a year ago I have lost weight. Not as much as I would like, but I still weigh less now than when I started. I have realized it is much more manageable to make small goals instead of focusing on the big picture. I have taken time for myself, without feeling guilty and have taken chances.

I may not be where I want to be, but I am closer than I was. Here's to the next year!

    Learning is so important in the journey that is life. Not only are you learning about being physically healthy, but I think you're learning about how to be more mentally healthy, in terms that your expectations are more in line with reality, you understand what is possible (being healthy) and what is not (doing it instantly and easily), and you know more about yourself and what you want than when you started.

    Keep moving forward. You have great things ahead of you, as long as you keep striving. You're worth the time and effort!
