So, I had my first class last night. It was a very small, diverse group of women. There was 5 there, including myself (I'm not sure how many they have usually, but I know they have at least 10-15 members of the troupe). And I was the only newbie, so I got extra attention. Not one-on-one, but literally 4-on-one. Front and center is not my favorite spot to be, but oh well. It was fun, the ladies were really sweet, funny, and helpful, and my shoulders are sore today. A lot of the beauty of belly dancing is the the way the arms frame the movement, so there's a lot of arm movement and, even harder, keeping the arms still for long periods of time above your head or straight out. We only went over 5 moves in the hour long class, 2 of them being arm movements. It was a lot different than the workout dvds.
I also learned that there are different styles of belly-dancing, and this troupe is a American Tribal Style (or ATS) troupe. Defined by it's gypsy-ish costumes and unique dance style. While many movements are the same, ATS troupes do not have choreograhped dances. Yup, every ATS performance is improvised. One dancer leads, and using cue movements (holding the right arm out straight to the side means to turn whatever step you are doing to the right), the other dancers follow. When the lead dancer is ready, all the dancers get in a big circle and the first one to break away becomes the new leader. So you really have to trust yourself and your fellow dancers. Supposedly, it brings the troupe closer together.
Okay, enough about that.
My first week back, I averaged 1764 calories a day (a bit high, my daily range is 1200-1550, 3,112mg of sodium, and 8 glasses of water
I logged 300 fitness minutes.
I also lost 2 lbs!
Not bad, not bad at all!
Friday, I'm going to menu plan a low sodium week and do some grocery shopping, so next week's sodium levels will look every better (and hopefully so will the calorie count!)
Happy Pre-Friday everone!
