Running: Outside Vs. Treadmill

A couple of years ago I started running on a treadmill about 4 days a week. At that time in my life running on a treadmill made sense to me and it worked for a little while. The gym was convenient since it was on my college campus, I could watch TV while working out (I didn't have a TV in my dorm), and I could socialize with friends and classmates. Eventually running in place did get boring and my only motivation became the TV. Luckily I was taking several fitness classes like Martial Arts, Kayaking, Racquetball, Tap Dance, and Aeorbic Walking so I did still exercise during those years.
Now that I've started running again I'm don't feel like a slave to the treadmill. I don't currently have a gym membership, but will get one soon so I can start taking Zumba, Pilates, and swimming classes. The only time I think about getting back on a treadmill now is when the weather is bad. Right now I forego TV time and listen to music when I run and sometimes I just listen to the birds singing around me. I actually enjoy running outside now and its more rewarding than being cooped up in a gym. I love that I can run and actually reach a destination (another street, neighborhood, park...) unlike a treadmill where you run in place and never get anywhere.
Being outdoors is freeing. Its refreshing to feel the sunshine, the cool breeze, see animals, flowers, and neighbors. I've become much more observant now that I run outside. I notice other people around me, pay more attention to cars and can determine which direction their coming from, and I've learned not to stress out every time a dog barks or runs up to me.
I'm excited to start this journey of running and see where it takes me! I'm looking for a 5K race to run in the next few months to get started and I'm looking forward to running the Cooper River Bridge Run next year!
