I didn't write anything yesterday as I was a bit down...but that is what supportive friends are for...good and bad. While I want to be upbeat and lift up my friends...sometimes life just throws a curve. For three months I have brought along a succession of bottle lambs with good results. I have raised bottle lambs in the past and never lost one. On one occasion I started with the powdered colostrum but I have never had problems so I haven't used it in recent years. Colostrum is noted to impart more immunity to the newborn. Clostridial bacteria is a soil born bacteria which can challenge a lambs system...tetanus is probably the most familiar one. When lambs start to nibble they can take in the bacteria...C. perfringes in particular...starts in the gut and can make lesions in intestine and muscle. Two of the three lambs is exhibiting symptoms...lameness and tucked up...started Sunday. One lamb seems to be showing some improvement but I am still guarded in my expectations...the largest and youngest is the most acute...able to stand and walk short distance but unable to rise without much difficulty. They are still eating well so I bottle feed, hold and massage the abdomen and limbs...and when I put the lamb on a padded towel I turn him after each feeding. I have explained to my Mom what is going on. I hate that she has to experience this part of raising lambs. I usually shield her from painfull events but I need her help feeding while I am at work. She held the sickest one for half an hour today. I am hopeful that the two lambs will recover to normal. I am thankfull that the smallest, Tom Thumb is well. It is possible that he was able to have nursed the colostrum from Spot as he was well and up on his feet when I brought him in. My future plan will be to keep the short dated colostrum on hand during lambing season....and use it.
I am not doing well with eating the "right things" , as I am definitely looking for comfort but I do accept that bad stuff is part of life and tommorro I will strive to pay attention to taking in nutritious foods and seeing to my health. I am taking Mom into Dallas to do business and other errands. We are eating out, Chinese...I will fill our plates with vegetables and reasonable portions of a healthy entree.
