Husband is dying and my heart is breaking

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

IIt's been over a week since my husband went for an overnight stay in the hospital. He had a harder time breathing then normal. He is on oxygen. Dr. told us that night he is in End Stage Emphysema. Wow we were not ready for that.
He's doing better now, since the doctor put him on steroids. He's down to 105 lbs, although he has always been thin you can see the weight loss on him. The steroids will make him put on weight and increase his appetite.
They say he has a 50/50 chance of surviving a year. IF ONLY WE KNEW what we know now, as little as a year or even six months ago. Exercise, exercising, exercise, exercise. We heard the words but did not appreciate the true meaning. Exercising would have improved his heart, lungs, brain, well being, everything.
We will do what we can now.
We just came back from a 15 min. walk (he uses a walker to hold his oxygen bottle) it was a beautiful night here in Florida with what looked like a full moon.
We'll be leaving to go back to VT in June and if he is still able we will return to Florida where we stay. We put our house in VT on the market

My prayers are with you and your husband. We don't know one another but I am where you are now for different reasons. My husband has a major blood clot in his carotid artery and it caused a series of strokes. We have a totally new reality and I am still working full time. The only way I can handle all of this is to stay Present Moment Focused. I don't look at tomorrow because it is too frightening. I don't look at yesterday because I feel too sad. I stay with what is right in front of me and try my very best to build a fantastic Today! it is working for me and I have regained my sense of humor, making light of the small mishaps when The Stroke is speaking.

Have fun in Florida....We love Sarasota! emoticon

I'm glad you have time to spend together and that you both are making the best of it. It is quality moments that stick with us for a lifetime. The present is as bright as you make it. I'm sure you both will make the most of every second. You are completely right, walking and exercise are important, even at this stage in the journey of life. It lifts the mood and builds reserves as well. It is the best thing to do on a daily basis. Safe travels to VT in June (the mud should be gone by then!)

I am so sorry you are having to go through this. Hopefully he will surprise his doctors and will be with you for longer. Whether it's 6 months, a year, two years, or more, make the most of your time together.

I am very sorry to hear of your husband's situation. God loves you both and He will provide whatever you lack. Ask God for healing, and trust and thank Him for the healing!

I am sorry for you, your husband, family and friends. Make the best of all you can but take it from someone with a tough quality of life- don't over push . It can make the next days tougher.enjoy doing together what you normally enjoy, the morning tea, the walk in the park, the sitting and enjoying each others company.

I wish you a longer life than the doctors said, they can't know for sure. emoticon
