Sleep (Or Lack Thereof)

When I was younger, I used to think I had the best of both my parent's sleep habits - like my Mom it took me FOREVER to fall asleep, but unlike her (and like my Dad) once I fell asleep, I was asleep!
Now I definitely take after my Mom in my sleep patterns - I take forever to fall asleep, light keeps me awake or wakes me up, I wake up frequently throughout the night...And I'm starting to think that on the nights I don't wake up frequently, I *dream* of waking up frequently!
I used to take Benadryl to help me sleep, but have been told it's not good for you and represses your going into REM sleep, so the sleep you do get isn't as restful. I've tried Melatonin, and it did nothing for me. I tried Ambien for a month, and the first two weeks were great, and then the last two weeks I slept less ON the Ambien than I did before I started taking it! I do know I don't have sleep apnia, which is one good thing, I guess.
I wear a sleep mask, and listen to music and read before bed - those things seem to make falling asleep easier. It just bothers me that there are nights where I almost fall asleep driving home (which is NOT good, and I know that haha) yet once I get home, I can be up for hours, unable to sleep.
That is one of the aspects of my life I am hoping to improve here. Maybe once I start eating healthier and exercising, I will start sleeping better....Here's hoping!
