My day at the ER

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

I'd been having chest pains since Sunday and this morning they really bothered me. That and the fact that they weren't going away. I have no one I can call, so I called the paramedics and asked to be taken to the hospital.

They took me to the local hospital because it's closer than Kaiser (my health plan). I spent several hours there before they could arrange to have me sent to Kaiser. I was told at the first hospital that I'd be admitted.

Finally I got to Kaiser just before 2PM. Did I mention that at this point I'd had NOTHING to eat all day? They poked and prodded me some more, told me I have hypertension, gave me some medicine and sent me home. And since I had no one I could call to pick me up, the ride home was a $73 cab. I'm not happy about that.

I'm definitely not going to work tomorrow, and I don't know yet about Thursday. I have to call my regular doctor tomorrow for an appointment. But at least I didn't have a heart attack.

Like everyone else, I'm glad you got in to see a doctor! You know, your hypertension and chest pain could be unrelated. Just last night, we were having this conversation at a dinner party. Two of us had experienced terrible chest pain, had been sent to the ER because our symptoms mimicked a heart attack, and then they found it wasn't.

It turned out to be esophageal spasms. I'm not saying that's what you had, but it's something that you should be aware of. You might want to ask your doctor if that could be what caused your pain.

Good luck, and I hope this was a one-time occurence for you! emoticon

IL I'm so Glad that it wasn't a heart attack or the onset of another sort of heart condition. You were so right to go to the hospital and check on it. It was so awful that you had to spend the cab fare to get home. As someone else mentioned Maybe you can bill your insurance company for the Cab and the Paramedics? Be sure to take the meds and get your blood pressure levels down. When DH gets a high run on his pressure it does quirky things to him. Good you are checking in with your PCP. They will know how best to help you. emoticon

Medication to lower your blood pressure and gradually losing weight ought to help you a lot.

Are there also some other factors that may be contributing? Some people have angina when they have difficulty breathing, which can happen to someone who is not in the best of shape. Some people do when they are extremely stressed or low on sleep.

Maybe if you take the medication for the blood pressure and manage the other stressors in your life as well as you can, you will feel a lot better.

By the way, I'm not just preaching. I lost my father suddenly and have had trouble with angina whenever I've run out of my asthma medication or had too little sleep too many days in a row.

Keep us posted so we know how you are doing. emoticon
