Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead... NO, not ME (anymore)... the Movie!

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Available for a limited time to watch for FREE (I don't know how long this will be available):

ME - July 1, 2011 - The Divine Miss O's 7th Birthday Party

How I started to find REAL WELLNESS three years ago, and still foundational to my journey!

For anyone not familiar, 'Green Smoothies' are part of the raw food movement, much more than a regular smoothie with greens added, and don't usually include protein powder, or dairy. A green smoothie is MUCH healthier and starts with and is mostly greens, with some fruit added for sweetness to compliment the greens. There's a whole nutritional (healing) philosophy attached.

I LOVE them and they will always be a part of my own nutritional plan. Here are my favourite resources... check it out:

Green for Life
(the book that started it all for me... VERY good)

If you're juicing greens, you may also want to void an oxylate overload:

You need to do your homework before you buy a juicer. Here are some links to help you with your homework... they made me aware of questions and concerns I hadn't considered:

...the machine you will be happy with is largely individual and based on your needs, preferences and goals.

I'm STILL here (hit a really rough patch before Easter, but I'm SLOWLY fighting back)...

My favourite quotes this week:

"Hold on to what is good, even if it is a handful of earth. Hold on to what you believe, even if it is a tree which stands by itself. Hold on to what you must do, even if it is a long way from here. Hold on to life, even when it is easier letting go. Hold on to my hand, even when I have gone away from you." PUEBLO BLESSING

"Refuse to fall down. If you cannot refuse to fall down, refuse to stay down. If you cannot refuse to stay down, lift your heart toward heaven, and like a hungry beggar, ask that it be filled, and it will be filled. You may be pushed down. You may be kept from rising. But no one can keep you from lifting your heart toward heaven."

"A life of gratitude accepts the bad with the good. Genuine gratitude is not a zero sum game in which thankfulness increases the more fortunate you are and decreases the more adversity you experience." DAN CLENDENIN

Something I'm pondering today... I found this VERY compelling and interesting to watch:
Dove Real Beauty Sketches

...And a snippet from my dose of Ann for today... I pray it lifts you up, as it did me (I hope you'll go read the whole thing)!

"The girl, she had grown deaf and numb and hard to all she was and had been and could be –
But her sisters knew her song.
Her sisters knew the beat of her heart when she had forgotten how to be.
Her sisters knew the rhythm of her return when she didn’t know the road back.
Her sisters knew the lyrics of why she was loved when she couldn’t remember how to live.
Her sisters sang her song — when she had long forgotten the words to herself.
Singing the girl’s song, all of them singing it soft and strong and certain — her sisters singing her back.
Her sisters sang her beauty when she saw herself ugly.
Her sisters sang her wanted when she saw herself broken.
Her sisters sang her hope when she only felt hurt.
Her sisters sang her beloved — when she couldn’t believe."

THANK YOU to all of you who continue to reach out to me and sing when I'm I'm having trouble hearing the melody as clearly as I'd like! ...No matter how silent I am, or how far away I feel, I am singing (no matter how feebly) for all of us!

Yes, I did get a chance to watch the whole movie. It was really positive about pointing us toward allowing our bodies to get back to a place of being able to heal themselves--if we are providing the nutrition it in fact NEEDS.

    Thanks for sharing this!

I'm a big time juicing fan! We are in the midst of re-designing our kitchen and a big consideration is room for my 2 juicers and vita-mix to be placed so they are easily accessible but hidden.

So, I just finished watching the movie... I found it *incredibly* inspiring on so many levels. It also reinforces so much of what I've come to believe about my own body's ability to heal. Over and over again, my body finds its way back from the brink of chronic illness (I do however wish it wasn't so easy to tip my balance away from wellness... my line between is very fine).

The movie raises SO MANY questions with respect to why we eat what we eat, how we define ourselves with food, the social aspect of food/eating and how this can either elevate us, or kill us... I found it fascinating (and very sad) that even in the face of grave health issues, and with the proof right in front of them that things can be turned around, the vast majority of people couldn't see themselves making any radical (or even small) changes to how they 'nourished' their bodies.

...And could these two men be any more inspiring?!?!? WOW!

As for the issues of fibre/blood sugar, I think juicing/green smoothies are a very powerful component of any wellness regime... and I'm beginning to lean much more strongly toward juicing to remedy acute issues. I don't think regulating blood sugar is a problem because you still get all of the soluable fibre with a high quality juicer, and if you are juicing primarily vegetables, you are still very low carb. It's like all of the people who are critical of 'paleo'... the proof for me is really in the results... people who are doing this only ever see improvements in all measurable markers of good health, including regulation of blood sugar.

Right now, I don't feel I need a full-on juice fast to address my health issues, and retaining my muscle mass is an equally high priority, but I can see myself juicing all of the fruit vegetables I would otherwise eat (and then some!) and have juice with my steak... and consume a lot of coconut oil on the side, LOL! Fat is the macronutrient I can't afford to skimp on (I keep re-learning this the hard way).

People either don't know, or tend to forget that liver health is critical to fat buring and overall metabolic health, and juicing goes straight to addressing any liver/metabolic dysfunction you might have (and if you're fat, you have liver/metabolic issues).

I look at my picture above, and I can only be thankful that I've been able to find ways of nourishing my body so that it can heal itself, and I am really grateful to people like Joe who are boldly and generously showing me the way.

Fat, sick and nearly dead, indeed.... Not any more!

Glad you're doing better, Ramona! I'm ambivalent about juicing, since I worry about not having fiber to regulate blood sugar. I liked the film, which I saw a while back, but I worry about protein deficiency. I can't see it as a long term solution, but I think it could be good to address severe problems.

I watched this about 2 years ago and bought a juicer, which I use pretty regularly. Great documentary. I just wonder how he washed his juicer since he used it while travelling. Trivial details, but just curious.
