When I was on SP as PennyAn, I had a wonderful Spark friend - Monty.
Monty was retired, and he lived in Florida. He had lost a lot of weight here on SP, and it showed on the before and after photos that he posted on his page. There was no doubt about his success - his new self looked like a different person.
Even though he did not need to lose any more weight himself, Monty stayed very active on SP, cheering on his friends' efforts.
I was lucky enough to be one of his friends. Monty wrote supportive comments on every blog I wrote. He applauded my successes and boosted me when I faltered. His comments were both wise and sensitive. He was ever-present and watching over - a true friend.
For many months last year I was not active on SP; then when I returned, I began again with this new name and page. I informed my old friends on a final blog as PennyAn and asked them to follow me over here. Many did, and many did not.
Just yesterday, I was looking through my old friends and came upon Monty. Smiling with memories of him and planning to contact him once again, I went to his page. There I saw a final blog entitled, "The worst blog I'll ever write..."
I learned that Marty had been diagnosed with lung cancer.
(He admitted in the blog that while he had been successful losing weight, he had not been able to quit smoking.)
That was yesterday. The blog had been written many months ago.
Today when I returned, Monty's page had been deactivated.
So the tribute that I was going to write on his page is here, instead, in this blog.
Let me just say, Thank you, Monty. Though we never met in person, you were a very real part of my life. You inspired me with your own success. You motivated me with your advice and warm words. You were an important part of my experience here on SP, and I will always remember you.
Merry Mary was so right. I had his name as Marty, when if fact it was Monty.
I have made those changes to his name in this blog.
I am sorry to hear that he passed last August.
Monty's page has not been deactivate, so I have written my message there.
