REAL LIFE HAPPENS

So, April has not been a fun month for me. I really shouldn't complain about the weather, I live in Hawaii and don't have feet of snow or patches of black ice or a spring that doesn't want to start. There's no flooding going on and the temperature is a slightly muggy 75* right now. What I do have is VOG. "Vog is created when volcanic gases (primarily oxides of sulfur) react with sunlight, oxygen and moisture. The result includes sulfuric acid and other sulfates." (from Wikipedia) It is a nasty mix, and when the Kona winds (from the SW or SSW) are up, it gets pretty thick over the whole state, not just Hawai'i Island. Like most types of air pollution, there are warnings and advisories issued, especially for people with respiratory conditions.
Now, in last weeks blog, I talked about my on going GI issues. This weekend, I was finally starting to feel better. I started increasing the amount of solid food I was eating, and even had some fresh salad mix. My doctor put me on an antibiotic, just in case what I was going through was a mild case of diverticulitis. I was hoping to start adding some cardio exercise back in to my life. Between the pain and not being able to really eat ( I was taking in about 500-1000 calories a day, mostly carbs from crackers) I just did not have the energy or desire to exercise. I think that the only reason I posted a weight "loss" is because I was taking in so few calories. I was feeling well enough to go to work on Friday, but I did notice that there was some increased pressure in my sinuses. Because the weather forecast for the weekend warned of increasing levels of vog, I started to take my allergy medicines on Thursday. They are once a day, and usually give me relief. I faithfully took them all weekend, but I still woke up this morning with Upper Respiratory Infection Symptoms. I feel like a mack truck has parked on my chest and my throat is raw and scratchy. I have the type of cough that barks and is slightly spastic. I called my doctor's office and told his nurse what as going on. I would have gone in if he insisted, but was hoping he could give me a cough medicine with codeine in it with out seeing me. I got my cough medicine, and I probably will not be able to any cardio for the rest of the month.
It is one of those times when it feels like Murphy has run amok. (as in Murphy's Law) I am doing my best to just hang in there, but I had to go shopping for ingredients for tonight's dinner, and I had to keep chanting, "You don't need the..." insert name of high fat, high calorie, processed snack food. I have adjusted my goals, changed how many calories I burn through exercise to "0", so that my calorie range would drop. I am hoping that focusing on a lower range will help me keep a steady weight.
I guess the main thing is I am tired of not feeling healthy when I am doing my best to have a healthy body.
May has got to get better.
