Grandmotherly advice

Monday, April 22, 2013

I love this bit of grandmother wisdom for curtailing impulse clothes purchases I read today: My grandmother always says you should wear something once for every dollar you spend on it. I thought it was silly the first time I heard it, but now I find myself holding up items and thinking "Will I really wear this 25 times?" It definitely helps my impulse buys! G-E-N-I-U-S! What tactics do you use to avoid purchase regrets?

I absolutely have a cost/wear ratio to justify expenses of clothing.

I have regretted very few clothing purchases in the 4 years since I lost the weight. I spent lots and lots of time trying on clothes and looking in the mirror and learning my new body and developing my new style. It seemed somewhat narcissistic, but overall I think that spending that time helped set me up to maintain. At first I tried to just reward myself and spend the amount I would have spent at Weight Watchers per week, but later I rewarded myself even more. I'd try on at least 20 things for each item I purchased. I still spend plenty of time when I select clothing. I think that helps me make better decisions.
