Stepping Back

Monday, April 22, 2013

I weigh in at 148 this morning, 1.5 pounds over my ticker. This will stop NOW!

I got a call from my sister in Michigan and my Dad has taken a turn for the worse. The hospice nurse confirms he is in the last stage(s) of his life.

My dad has refused any sort of caregiving or respite care from Hospice for my mom. So my siblings and I are going to make individual visits to visit Dad while he's still "our Dad" and also to hopefully give my mom a break.

I'll be leaving on Saturday for at least a week. I may be able to Spark a bit, but I think I need to step back a bit.

I DO want you to know that I was highly inspired by PINKHOPE's blog yesterday on losing while vacationing! While this is far from a vacation, I tend to totally lose it whenever I am away from home and out of my routine. I vow not to let that happen this time! Here's a link to her blog:

And here's something else: we're hoping to be back in time for the Women Run Arkansas 5K, so I definitely need to keep up with the running so I can do that.

Later, Sparkfriends!

Like that you will continue to take care of yourself while spending time with your family.
Taking a walk is a great way to clear your head, process thoughts or even take a mini break.
My heart, thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

All best to you and your family at this time. Everyone understands that need to "step back" . . . other things take priority, and nothing more so than this.

Thank you for the blog link. That is a remarkable blog with many inspiring and practical elements.

I am very sorry you have this sorrow and distress. Glad you are able to go and contribute what is possible.

You cannot control the deterioration of your Dad. You cannot control his response to it. You cannot control its impact on your Mom except to a limited extent. BUT you have control over what you put in your mouth; portions, certainly, if not always selection. AND you will have a certain number of minutes each day where it would be possible to climb a few flights of stairs or walk around a building a few times, do wall push-ups or high knees, do some stretches. I am speaking bluntly about this because I am convinced that it is in your best interest to sustain your health progress even while you are under this tremendously stressful and grief-laden situation. I care about you so I didn't sugarcoat it.

I encourage you to write down (in a sentence or two) your strategy for healthy eating and exercise on the trip.

We understand about not hearing from you much now. I will pray for you and your family.

I second what Meadsbay said about Hospice - they truly are angels and can help keep our loved ones who are terminally ill comfortable while taking some of the responsibility off the main caregiver. So sorry about your dad!!

I'm glad you'll get to spend time with your Dad AND give your Mom a break. Be gentle with yourselves during this stress. I'm impressed that you're already planning for how to avoid gaining weight while there. Thanks for the link.

So sorry about your dad- I hope, for your mother's sake, that he consents to hospice- they are angels in your family's situation.

btw- I have mastered the art of not gaining on vacations- lots of F&V's and fish, when available, and lots of walking.
I spent 9 days in Paris- up ONE lb.
2 weeks in Italy- up TWO lbs
(btw- both gains could have been because of the long plane rides)
3 weeks (many times) at my home in the Caribbean- up ZERO lbs (walking and swimming a lot).
