I did it! I reached a goal I've had for years. I ran my first 5K ever yesterday. I completed it despite a strained Achilles heel. I had to walk a fair amount, but I still got my best time ever, a 44:41 (14:23 pace). I realize it isn't the best time/pace out there, however, I did it!
This is a much bigger deal for me than just running 3.2 miles. It is conquering a fear of failure. I'm terrified of failing and often don't put myself out there because if I don't try, I can't fail. In this case, I set a goal, made a plan, didn't give up when the plan didn't work out as I anticipated due to injury, followed through on the race, and even told people about it. This is a HUGE thing for me.
So about the race: I got to the buses at the beginning of the time we could (didn't want to be late) and made a friend on the bus quickly. When we got to the staging area it was only 43 degrees so they had heat sheets for all of us. I have fallen in love with heat sheets let me tell you. We were at the staging area for over an hour and a half before we lined up. I started near the middle of the pack but very quickly got passed. The first mile was the hardest for me. It seemed SO long, the other two seemed much shorter. There were two hills (I walked both) but it was a pretty flat course otherwise. There was a lot of security for obvious reasons but several of the police officers were cheering us on which gave me a burst of energy each time. I ran almost the entire last mile since I could actually see the finish line for most of it. Surprisingly, two of my friends were waiting near the finish line to cheer me on. It meant a lot to me. I ended up tearing up several times during the race because it really meant so much for me to be able to do this.
Turns out I'm pretty addicted to racing and to running in general. I've already made a race "wish list" and will sign up for them as I get the money to. I also want to start training for a 10K. I'm really pretty excited!
