Quote 4 the Day

Sunday, April 21, 2013

“People use drugs, legal and illegal, because their lives are intolerably painful or dull. They hate their work and find no rest in their leisure. They are estranged from their families and their neighbors. It should tell us something that in healthy societies drug use is celebrative, convivial, and occasional, whereas among us it is lonely, shameful, and addictive. We need drugs, apparently, because we have lost each other.

We have distanced ourselves from each other. And we are inundated with messages from drug companies all over the place. The quote definitely got me thinking.

Interesting! I think we have been conditioned, also, to believe that we should not feel pain or sadness and that these in themselves are shameful rather than healthy responses to life's ups and downs. We are constantly encouraged to medicate our feelings away rather than be with them. So...not sure that the use of drugs is always connected to something intolerably painful...just think we fear any experience of pain thinking it is bad or wrong and should be eliminated.
That's my 2 cents :)
