Gardening - Blog Assignment for Week 3 April Showers Team

Saturday, April 20, 2013

My blog assignment for the A&I BSG challenge this week is: "Do you plant a veggie garden? If so what do you plant?"

This will be a short blog for me!

We used to have a veggie garden but stopped having one a few years ago when we began RVing in the summers. We wouldn't be home enough to take care of it or enjoy the veggies when they came in. I do miss having one though, especially for the tomatoes - my favorite garden vegetable. We also used to have zucchini, beans, peppers, cucumbers, and asparagus, oh, and also some herbs. Fortunately, we live in an area where there are great farmer's markets, and the produce is always great! I especially look forward to getting corn on the cob each summer.

Now that our house is under contract and we will be moving out and living in our motor home starting in July, there will be no way we can have a garden!

We raise tomatoes, lots of them, squash, peppers, herbs, back when we also raised green beans, I canned tomatoes, beans, as well as jams, jellies, peaches, and loved it, but too much work now, and it never seemed like we could eat it all before the next year, so, just for our enjoyment now I still freeze cherry tomatoes for soups and stews, easy and good.
Good Luck on your rving life, I am very jealous too, My DH and I waited too long, he just doesnt' like the driving anymore, but when we had a motorhome, we really enjoyed it, Have Fun

I had read that your house was under contract when I visited the chat thread for your team and meant to congratulate you but just never found the time to. I know it's hard to give up gardening but you and your DH are starting a new chapter in your lives. Think of all the things you'll get to see and memories you'll be making! I must admit I'm a tiny bit jealous! emoticon emoticon At least there are some good farmer's markets to visit to get your fresh veggies though. Have fun on your RV trips and be sure to come visit me one of these days! emoticon

I know people in rv's that have garden buckets and pots. They do have to buy dwarf and bush vegetables. Plus many have cat grass pots. Enjoy the new chapter in your life.

I think that most of us cut back on the gardening as we get older. We used to grow practically everything we could grow here but now we need some rest. LOL.

I know, we will have to give up a lot, too! However, I am happy to make the trade off! The only thing I will really miss is having a horse out my back door. We got rid of almost all of our horses in the summer of 2011, and now, have only 2 left, which are no problem for our neighbor to look after when we go on our monthly jaunts with our Good Sam's Group, but if we go full time, I will have to get rid of those...........
Used to have a garden when I was a kid and living in Michigan, and we grew EVERYTHING in there! There were 5 of us kids, and that is how we spent our summers, working in the garden and harvesting, canning and freezing! I swore when I was an adult, I would NEVER have a garden, and I haven't! I do enjoy my roses though, and look after those.
Have a great weekend, my new friend! emoticon emoticon

Great blog Amy. Farmers Markets are such an awesome alternative to having your own garden. Maybe you could have a container tomato plant or two in your RV.

I'm into flowers and an occassional vegetable. I'm not good at vegetable gardening though...and love bulbs...good luck!

Sorry you don't have a way to have a garden. I know how hard gardening is to give up. However, RV'ing sounds like a ton of fun.
