Ah, the irony. I remember distinctly thinking that I was skeptical of the 500-calorie portion of the hCG Diet but 'what could it hurt?'
A month later those words came back to haunt me as I had a heart monitor strapped to my chest for 24 hours. So thankful I stopped this diet before it became more serious. I've since found people online who believe the hCG diet caused a stroke or heart attack.
Okay, since we've already established there really is no hCG in hCG Drops. Found that out after I had to submit an adverse event report to the FDA on these hCG drops I was taking. So what is causing such serious side effects if not hCG? It is possible that these companies are hiding other ingredients in their drops. In fact, with the drops I took, there is talk online by former distributors that they quit when they found out about hidden ingredients.
I believe the serious danger lies in the 500-calorie portion of the diet. There is no hCG in the drops. They tell you you are using fat stores and really burning 2,500 or more calories a day. Not! You are getting roughly 500 calories a day and your body is not being discriminatory in where it starts burning calories. In my case, my doctor said my body was starting to eat its internal organs. Okay, that's scary.
After reading and learning and asking two million questions of people, I've learned that a 500-calorie diet should NEVER be attempted unless you are being closely monitored by a physician. They can catch the serious side effects before it is too late. You are not monitoring your blood pressure or listening to your heart. My side effects came on suddenly and likely yours will as well.
Since the pro-hCG Facebook pages and forums delete for the most part any and all side effect posts, I thought I'd share a little of what I've found on other non-hCG forums.
Here are a few concerning posts I found online about people who did the hCG Diet and had a heart attack or stroke:
"It's not worth it. My boss tried the HCG diet and it nearly killed him. It caused some electrolytic imbalances in his body which led to a heart attack"
"In both cases, one involving a man in his 30s, the other a man in his 50s, the patients went into cardiac arrest. 'They were treated with the full-court press,' said Kenigsberg, a cardiac electrophysiologist. The men survived, and received pacemakers.
Later, Kenigsberg learned the two had been on diets that utilized the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin, or HCG, and had no prior history of heart trouble. One of the men later resumed an HCG diet — and experienced another heart arrythmia."
"When I got the call from the emergency room that my patient Tom (not his real name) had just rolled in with a heart attack, it took me by surprise....As it turned out, there was indeed more to the story. Tom had been reluctant to let me know that he was on the HCG diet, the latest fad diet sweeping through the country."
"My mom just had a massive stroke. Mom and I had both been on the Phase 3 of our HCG diets, she did the 23 day cycle. Our family was against the diet. "
"More serious potential consequences include heart arrhythmia, stroke and brain hemorrhage. Pregnant women who follow these diets are more likely to have children with birth defects. "
"After Magstress posted about her friend, I just couldn't keep it up. I have anxiety issues as it is, and that was just too much to ignore. Apparently her friend lost a bunch of weight on hcg, and as on her 2nd or 3rd round, and had a stroke, and is now in a nursing home."
This is just a very small sampling of what is out there. I've found so many posts from people who suffered with side effects from this diet. I know without a doubt, I'm not alone.
So, what could it hurt to try this diet? As I found out, it could hurt YOU!
