I've been growing it out lately, since I've never really had it long, and I wanted to try it. Figured I should do it now, while I'm young and it's strong and shiny enough to grow long (I'm aiming for mid-back length I think)... So I haven't had a haircut in like 6 months. I desperately need one, just to get it thinned out and to put some layers back in, and to have real bangs again! I will shell out the cash for that before summer classes start.

Problem: My hair was getting pretty washed-out. The golden-brown color of my youth is getting darker and more ashen with each passing year.

So I decided to go red. But I think I went a little toooooo red.

I was aiming for a light auburn color with reds and coppers... but it seems a shade or two too light for me. Having a little more brown in it will complement my skin tone better, I think, while still maintaining the red/copper tint.

This is the shade I am considering. It doesn't look much different, but it is 2 shades darker than the dye I just used.

What do you guys think? Keep or go darker? Also, do you think my hair needs a "break" from coloring, or will it pick up the darker dye right away? I am a total amateur when it comes to hair dye, and I need opinions!

Update: "You know nothing, Jon Snow!"

I think that's a beautiful shade of red. I've had red hair for about 8 years now, and it oxidizes and fades really quickly, so that bright bright red will have faded slightly in a week or so. Use shampoo for coloured hair, and stay out of the sun, also, places like Ulta sell a red glaze that you can use over your colour which puts a little bit of the brightness back into it.

As for wanting to grow it out now, while you're young, I'm 48, and have a pile of strong shiny hair down to below my bra-strap. emoticon

    I like the red.

Some advice from my niece who is a hair dresser. You can also mix the colors from more than one box to get the shade you want.

My experience, with reds your hair always looks brihgter the first few days after you color it, I wait at least a week before I judge if I like the color. Also, you need to wait 4-5 weeks before re-coloring. If you have soemone who cuts your hair, they will be happy to help you figure out how to do this at home especially if they know you do it for $$ reasons.

OMG! I love your hair, and I love the color! I have been dying my hair a reddish brown for years... now I go to a stylist and have them custom mix my color (Aveda products) as I can't get what I want from a box. If you really feel like this isn't a good color for you, then I would highly recommend setting aside some funds for a stylist and create a custom color. One of my requirements was to be reddish-brown without auburn and without being too dark, as I don't want that "purple glow" because it washes me out.

But really, you DO look gorgeous!

Keep that for a while! It look so natural on you, and your hair is beautiful just like it is. I tried red and it was awful on me. I ended up with a big mess and had to have it all cut off. I agree with you on having it long while you are young, but it is beautiful (did I say that already?) just like it is. Thanks for sharing the pictures in your blog! emoticon

Wear teh color for a few days and let it grow on you.
Also, reds fade pretty fast. So you will have a change to play with the color sooner than you think.

oooh! I think the red is super pretty! I agree with some of the other comments - give it some time before you decide if you want to redye it. Usually, dye color "fades" a little bit after the first few washes, and you may decide it's perfect once the brightness fades. :)
