NAFD ~~20 Bloggers Unite... are they Self serving? Update due to help from friends.

Saturday, April 20, 2013

I like to blog.. I like to post ... These are tools to offer and receive support. I recently read a post on one of my Sparkteams that they thought blogging was self serving.. This comment really bothered me..Here is why.

I post a blog.. to me it is no different than a post on a message board ..perhaps longer and more winded but the same. I post information in a blog or I can on a message board the same thing. So to me posting on a message board would be just as self serving as posting in a blog.

I am not a judgmental person. That person has a right to what they believe. I would like to challenge the thought that they are different. You post on message board or blog and get positive responsive, inspiration, pats on back , ideas on how to solve your dilemma.. How are the two different my friend ?

As far as the Self Serving part.. This is a site to offer and receive support, to find others like you. To inspire and be inspired.. To make every day more healthy whether working to lose weight or just get healthy. Not everyone needs to lose weight.. Some even come here because they need to know they are not alone. Some are lurking , hopefully gaining self confidence to post on a blog , message board or a simple reply to someone.Learning from what we post on message boards or blogs.. Knowing it is possible because someone could do it .. so maybe they can too.

I do post for positive response.. I post so it may inspire some who lurks and thinks WOW I can do that too. IF even one person reads my blog or your message post and makes a better choice.. then it was worth it. If we can make one person not feel alone.. it was worth it. IF you or I inspire one person, it was worth it.

So many of us.. (not all mind you ) but with a site of millions of users.. there are hundreds , probably thousands who never heard kind words growing up. Some maybe never in their life.. but here they don't feel alone.. here they find companionship, they find a place to be peaceful and inspired.. here they feel liked and if lucky loved by someone. Here they are gaining confidence to make healthy choice, to walk down the block and not be scared of people looking at them.. Here they know they are not alone.. And IF them reading my blog does that. .Then I will post on my friend.. And if you don't like it .. great you never have to read it.. but know this..

I came here for that companionship, for someone to help me as I help them. To hold hands so to speak with my fellow humans in telling the WORLD WE CAN do this. WE MATTER TOO !! no matter your struggle.. we all matter!

I will continue to post on Blogs , Message boards, email.. I came here for support and that is a big way we give and get it here in an online world. So in the end you're right.. some Blogs are Self Serving but I will be Blogging on my friend.

I hope all my fellow Sparkers friends and lurkers... Unite and fight for what they believe in. I CAN DO it ..so my friends CAN YOU !!

I have to update my post as I should have done more research before hand. Thanks for your help Sumay and Dusty.

self-serving means serving one's own interests often in disregard of the truth or the interests of others.

Your post and mine are not self serving if we desire to help out others and are telling in truth what we post..

So why some blogs truly are self serving .. I hope they don't lump us all together.. I hope they give some bloggers a chance to help support them with this give and take idea.

    I agree with you Dawn,
some people on here are blogging to "big" themselves up, look how good I am and what I have achieved. So what, you saw the light and now you run marathons. Good for you!!! Not everyone WANTS to run a marathon, we are quite happy going at our own pace.
I think that is why I joined the team Tortoises unite, we will get there one day. All in good time!
And you Madam, don't change, don't forget, YOU are an inspiration to others.

Thanks for all your comments so far.. Dusty brought up a very valid point.
I guess I view it 2 ways.. There really truly are" self-serving " blogs and for those individuals I feel sorry. They are missing out on the give and take of support. If I ever get that way Slap me someone.

On the other hand.. I believe in Freedom of speech . I don't have to agree with you or you with me.. I guess those that are true self serving will lose their following as other will just get tired of hearing them with no give and take. But they do have a right to put it out there. Just as much as we have the right to not read it or comment on it.

Sumay gave me this definition:self-serving means serving one's own interests often in disregard of the truth or the interests of others ! I guess I am not self- serving after all.. so I will be updating my post. with Sumay's and Dusty's help.

Great topic. I agree with you and others commenters. If blogging rewards someone in their achieving their goals then it seems like a good means to an end. I like reading blogs when I am part of a SparkTeam, because the blogs are a way to let team members know each other better.

Oh, now you have opened my eyes a little .DUSTY. Perhaps they are talking about those blogs that seem more written to get noticed - and seem to be at the top of the list for "best blogs?" They write often and don't really share, but just write to be seen?

Is that what you are talking about? Yeah, I have seen those. And - those I avoid at all costs. At first - I read them and even commented on them but at some point I realized that there really wasn't a person behind them (if that makes sense).

That is definitely not what we are doing - at all.

Not all bloggers are like you Dawn:)

I think there are hundreds (maybe more) members that all they do here on SparkPeople is blog. I definitely don't think that's right.

Please, Please I KNOW that's NOT you! :)

I've been here years almost since the beginning and SparkPeople was founded on the "Team" concept. A give and take. (Like you said.)

I think there is a difference between blogging and posting a message.

Some blogs read like it's all take and no give. There's rarely a conversation. It's a blog with comments only. I would call those kind of blogs selfish.

Many bloggers will respond to questions and comments in another blog, on a member's SparkPage or in a SparkMail. Which is very kind and considerate and I think the right thing to do.

I don't blog and I only read blogs that catch my eye.

Yes I know there or good blogs and not so good blogs so this is just my opinion and again I'm NOT talking about you Dawn. Hugs!

Please note all that if the person who wrote the blog responds to a comment on the same blog no one will know it unless they keep checking back often on their own.

Only by subscribing to a blog will you get notified of a "new" blog, not comments.

I blog to keep a record of my journey to health! I don't do it to get responses, I do it for me to learn about myself. If someone comments, thats great! I can use the advice or just the knowing that there are people who understand! Keep blogging!

Oh, and I talk too much!

So - I am a dweeb sometimes - that geeky side of me does come out. Oh well, it is me and I love that about me. I decided to look up exactly what that person meant by self-serving. Now, I did Major in English in college - but that doesn't mean that I know EVERYTHING! It's just not a word I have commonly used. So, here goes

self-serving means serving one's own interests often in disregard of the truth or the interests of others

Right off the bat I see a problem. Blogs are not posted in disregard to the truth - in fact, they are very revealing not only to those who read them - but also to those who write them. We may be going in one direction and at the end of the blog we are somewhere else (and wondering how in the heck did we get there?) We end up not only sharing in our humanity - but we also learn a lot more about ourselves along the way.

A second problem I see is that blogs do not disregard the interests of others. In fact, this entire website was created for the mere fact that they know being a part of a community helps people reach their goals. They made blogs a part of that equation because it is a way in which people feel they share in an online community. Blog posts are not just posted for our own needs - but often it is in our desire to share our victories with others who understand what it means to us (and how far we have come) - it is also in our desire to share whatever tips and tricks we have learned along the way.

Most importantly - we all are human - deep inside us we all want to feel a part of something greater than ourselves - that we matter - that others care. Some of us never had those feelings before and some of us don't have them now because we feel alienated from a society that worships stick-thin people and doesn't understand how we could do this to ourselves. I mean - just put the fork down already! If you don't believe me - I have read several blogs where ignorant people just thought it their right to call people names just because they were overweight.

So - I really don't care what other people say. If they don't want to read blog posts - don't - it doesn't bother me none. While I am learning to live a healthier life with my SparkFriends by my side - I can only feel sorry for someone who doesn't want to be a part of that. Why wouldn't you want to be a part of something that makes a difference in someone's life? Besides - while you are helping them over the wall - they are boosting you too!

Keep doing what you are doing - and don't let it bother you too much. You are not wrong - my dear friend - you know what you want and what you need. We no longer need anyone to evaluate our journey for us - let's just take it one step at a time. What adventure awaits us - I don't know - but I'm sure it is going to be EXCITING!

Couldn't have said it better myself, Dawni! No one's required to READ my blog! Sometimes it's just a black and white way for me to give myself a pep talk...or connect with my higher, divine self. But regardless of why we do it...WE DO IT. As Joy Behar says in her crazy-a** Long Island accent, 'Who cahes???' (the letter R omitted on purpose, as she never pronounces it anyway...tee hee). It is one of the MANY tools on SP that have gotten me to where I am today. And for everyone of those tools, I am eternally grateful...even, and especially for the self-serving blog :-).

Loved this blog! I hope you keep going and wish you the best of luck. You're absolutely right . . . there are many purposes to the blogging and posting . . . and the reading. I feel they have all helped me to achieve success that I never achieved before.
Best wishes to you and success in meeting your goals.

Fantastic! Well said....I totally agree with you on all accounts.....We all didn't have perfect, cookie cutter upbringings......We all need and get different things from this website..The bottom line is that this is a fantastic support system...We won't let a few oddballs change our positive outlooks and experiences...I post a lot...but haven't had the nerve to do a daily blog yet....Will get there soon.Happy Saturday and Happy Sparking!
